January 23 2003
Police today arrested eight people and seized ecstasy tablets and cannabis with a street value of $700,000 during morning raids.
Inspector Bob Hill said police conducted nine raids at 6am, including two in central Victoria at Murchison and Moyreisk, confiscating $500,000 worth of ecstasy and $200,000 worth of cannabis.
One man has been charged with drug offences and police expect to charge others with commercial drug trafficking offences later today.
Inspector Hill was speaking outside a disused shop in suburban Airport West where police were seizing hydroponic equipment and cannabis from four upstairs bedrooms.
"This is an investigation targeting high-level drug trafficking," Insp Hill told reporters.
The eight people being questioned by police are in their early 20s to late 30s.
One is from country Victoria and one of the seven from suburban Melbourne is a woman.
Inspector Hill said police had also seized assets from the residential addresses, including five luxury vehicles.
The arrests are a culmination of a five-month investigation targeting trafficking of ecstasy and amphetamines.
