Pine O shot floors drinker
By Paul Anderson
March 07, 2007 07:35am

A MELBOURNE nightclub barmaid deliberately served a shot glass of Pine O Cleen to a customer, it has been claimed.

The man was sick immediately after drinking the fluid early on Sunday morning at the Evolution nightclub in Prahran.

An ambulance was called, but he refused hospital treatment.

He is said to still be ill from swallowing the cleaning chemicals.

Insp Graeme Arthur, of the Region 1 liquor licensing unit, said he was disturbed by the claim.

"He is alleging that he's been given some sort of poisonous substance by a nightclub employee," Insp Arthur said.

"It's very unusual. I haven't seen anything like this before.

"We are following up with the nightclub in terms of whether it was an accident or intentional."

Investigators have video footage and it is believed they found a bottle of Pine O Cleen under the bar at the Commercial Rd venue.

Sources said the man was offered a "complimentary drink".

Pine O Cleen is a hospital grade disinfectant which claims to "kill germs on contact".

The active ingredient is benzalkonium chloride.

Victorian Poisons Centre manager Jeff Robinson said a mouthful of Pine O Cleen would kill any sense of taste for a couple of days and trigger nausea and diarrhoea.

"People can get quite ill from this," Mr Robinson said.

"It wouldn't be a pleasant experience."

Mr Robinson said tricking someone into drinking the fluid would be "stupid and irresponsible".

Insp Arthur said the nightclub had co-operated. Evolution management did not return phone calls from the Herald Sun yesterday.

Lol if she did it putting 2mg of LSD in HER drink would be a funny revenge.

Either way.. what the hell.. she could of had a manslaughter or murder case against her.. IF it is true she did it. Silly stuff.

Barmaid charged over cleaning fluid shot
March 09, 2007 05:42pm

A MELBOURNE barmaid who allegedly served a patron a shot of cleaning fluid has been charged.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the incident happened last Sunday morning, when a man was served the cleaning fluid instead of a shot of alcohol at a nightclub in inner suburban Prahran.

“The man drank half the shot glass (of fluid) before realising it was not a normal drink and becoming violently ill,” the spokeswoman said.

“He was treated at the scene by paramedics and reported the incident to police later that day.”

The 22-year-old barmaid from Park Orchards, in Melbourne's east, was today charged with intentionally causing injury, recklessly causing serious injury and administering a substance to another person.

The woman was bailed to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates court on May 18.

'Pine-O-Cleen bartender' escapes conviction
February 4, 2008 - 4:57PM

A female bartender who served a customer Pine-O-Cleen disinfectant has escaped conviction in Melbourne Magistrates Court.

But she was fined $3,000 and handed an 18-month good behaviour order.

The court heard that Emily Craig, 23, of Park Orchards, in Melbourne's north, served Matthew Papaluca, then 18, 10ml of Pine-O-Cleen in a shot glass mixed with 20ml of cola at 6.15am in the Evolution nightclub in inner city Prahran on March 4 last year.

Ms Craig's lawyer George Balot asked that his client not receive a conviction, saying she was cooperating with police, had written an apology to Mr Papaluca and was remorseful.

Ms Craig has agreed to assist police in their investigations into the actions of two security guards who the court heard had encouraged her to serve the cleaning disinfectant.

Mr Balot said his client had served the disinfectant as a joke and not in a vengeful or malicious way.

She lost her responsible service of alcohol licence and cannot serve alcohol again.
