This was just played on Channel 10 news and I have been unable to find a newspaper article regarding the incident. It stated that 7 people had been rushed to hospital after taking pills with an unknown content at a popular South Australian nightclub overnight. I will add any information if it is found, but at this stage there is little known. If anyone has information about this please post it up. As it was in South Australia and 7 people were hospitalised one may be inclined to think the pills possibly contained PMA.

drplatypus: are you able to shed any light on this situation?

edit: seems like it was GHB/1,4B rather than any pills they may have taken - read below.

One was a GHB overdose- intubated ventilated and corroborating the ample evidence that we have that it is a safe drug- and a whole bunch of amphetamine-like-substance overdoses, which probably weren't PMA, or MDMA for that matter.
Too tired to give more details- going to bed to dream of a country where people know how to take drugs safely...

it also said the pills ranged in colour from white, to grey to pink. that could be 2 colours with a mistaken diagnosis. but still, seems a little strange to me. 2 different colours = 2 different batches doesn't it?

From news.com.au posted this morning:
'Bad' drug suspected in club illness

'Bad' drug suspected in club illness
February 8, 2004

SEVEN Adelaide nightclubbers treated in hospital early today might have taken drugs from a bad batch, police said.

One of the seven remained in intensive care at Royal Adelaide Hospital this morning, but most others had been discharged, a police spokesman said.

All reported feeling unwell and complained of drug-related symptoms, he added.

Police were continuing investigations and had not ruled out the nightclubbers having been affected by a bad batch of the designer drug ecstasy.

The seven, including four females, were rushed by ambulance from the Heaven nightclub on West Terrace on Adelaide's city fringe between 2am and 5am (CDT) today, police said.

Police said other nightclubbers who felt sick today should seek medical attention.

Oh no :(

This is going to fuel the pre-election crack down on drugs no doubt.

if it was PMA wouldn't they all be at approximately the same status? ie.. why is one in intensive care, and the others not? perhaps they had mixed different pills..?

It could be for any number of reasons, however the most simplistic answer would be that more of these pills were taken causing more adverse effects.

It was exceptionally hot last night in Adelaide.. Pills + Heat = Dehydration. To take a stab in the dark, I'm guessing these people weren't drinking enough water..

Thanks for the information drplatypus. This would certainly correlate with the fact that different colored pills were taken, coupled with their clear lack of knowledge regarding the use of GHB/1,4B. I am somewhat saddened that this was trumped up as a mystery chemical in pills, turning into a political point scorer against bikie gangs by the SA premier.

The symptoms of a GHB/1,4B overdose wouldn't have been anything like a PMA overdose, which makes me wonder what the hell the media was told, possibly jumping to their own conclusions. It does highlight that the threat to the health of partygoers is more likely to come from GHB/1,4B rather than the less common threat PMA. It is a shame that incidents such as these can be easily averted with education, and this is certainly what the government needs to invest its dollars in.

When i was watching the news, they said 6 hospitilised after what police suspect, to be bad batch of fantasy..... then the news presenter went on to say something about pills which was very confusing.

They also said they arrested a victorian man. Hopefully he still had whatever he was selling on him.

They said on the late news that 7 people had DIED! It was at * nightclub in Adelaide. I wish they would bloody tell us what sort of pills they were... how ridiculous!

drplatypus works at the Royal Adelaide hospital, so he would know. I believe it was unknown what exactly had caused these effects and they suspected that it was from the pills. drplatypus has said that it was GHB/1,4B and not the pills, and as I have said above this would account for the differing colors of pills. I would not be alarmed that there is a killer pill out there circulating, however you should always test your pills and use anecdotal reports from sources such as pillreports.com to determine if the pill you have contains adulterants. It is easy to see how users who do not know the dangers of GHB/1,4b would be able to die from the substance, so please exercise caution when using this substance, the dose response curve is very steep!

Might I ADD, one of them was a 15 year old.....

shit is gonna hit the FAN!

Just saw the report on Channel 10 late news, sad stuff. I hope the media gets their facts straight and actually publicise what drug it was that infact led to these deaths, but knowing the media/politicians it will probably be attributed to the evil drug that is mdma *rolls eyes*

<media mode>
are you still talking about those pills?
we're on to the bikie gangs corrupting our children now!

this has just come on the news in perth, and to quote "seven people have DIED in an adelaide nightclub"

what the fuck??? did i miss something??? are news presenters allowed to tell bold faced lies to tug at the heartstrings of the general population??

now there will be all these uninformed fools walking around thinking that ecstasy is deadly... ARGH the frustration!!!

I'm pretty sure that this is not true. This report is more likely to be accurate since the media have motivation to lie about people dying because it attracts attention, whereas there is no motivation to make up unsensational claims like "six have been treated and allowed to leave hospital".

I'm hanging out for more comprehensive and less speculative reports in today's newspapers.

No one has died and its impossible to tell what information the media in any given state runs off. The media in this country is sadly as much a tool of the Australian government that it was in NAZI Germany.
