Hi all, I've been taking hydrocodone a couple months now (for pain) and my tolerance has slowly crept up to about 20-25 mgs. Now I have the opportunity to acquire some 80 mg oxycodone, but will that be too much for me with my present hydrocodone tolerance? In the interests of harm reduction, I want to know what mg oxy equals what mg hydro. So I know if I should turn down the oxy or not (my friend is offering me a few of her meds, I know we're not supposed to share, but I've been in a lot of pain recently due to a surgical procedure that was done and I'm seriously considering it.)

In the interest of complete harm reduction, look into other ways of managing your pain. Tolerance only grows, and grows, and grows, and Addiction can set in and take you to places you do NOT want to go.

However, oxy and hydro are similar, but oxy is stronger. 20-25 mg of Hydrocodone is not a very large dose, so I would start as small as possible. My guess is 10-15mg. There are conversion calculators if you google for them, where you can type in your dose of one opioid and it will give you the equivalent dose of another.

If you're still getting relief from 20-25mg of Hydrocodone, I'd say just stick with those and don't make the switch to Oxys, especially if they're 80s. You won't need that much unless of course you're in serious pain.

I've always found Oxy's to be way more addictive than Hydrocodone, mainly because they're much stronger and more pleasant IMO. Like the above poster said, if you do switch, somewhere between the ballpark of 10-15mg should be sufficient.

are u talking about the 80mg op ocs? if so, they are time release, so i would think that even with your small tolerance, u could safely take a half of one anyway (assuming we're talking ops without any attempts at circumventing time release)

please dont switch to oxys, get off of opiates right now when you can...
if you dont.
youll know exactly why im tellin you this in a couple months to years...

Increasing your doses of opiates and switching to more potent drugs to get the same feeling are the first signs of the slippery slope that leads to addiction.

What kind of pain is it? short term or chronic? You've already been taking them for months so I assume chronic. Is pain the only reason you use, or do you get high as well/ use it to deal with anxiety/insomnia/boredom?

I highly recommend you do not switch to oxycodone from hydrocodone. In a few more months you'll be asking about Opana, then a bit later, about heroin (but you'll just snort it), and finally you'll end up on the needle. I've seen it happen to myself and so many people, including many who were prescribed them for legitimate pain. Having a drug be medically useful to you does not mean that its other effects don't apply to you. No drug I have ever encountered is as insidiously addictive as opiates. Many people don't realise they have a habit until they run out and feel withdrawals for the first time. When I first used opiates I would take 3x 5mg vicodin and be high. When my heroin addiction was at its worst I was IVing 2-3 grams of high quality heroin every single day. It didn't get me high, It wasn't fun, it just kept me from being violently sick from withdrawl. No other drug has the addictive potential of opiates (greater % of people who use them become addicted than with any other kind of drug).

I don't know your situation, but I feel like I should try to explain how easy it is for opiates to take everything away from you without you realizing until its too late, and its best to be aware of the risks when using drugs this dangerous. As my addiction progressed it didn't even register to me as a problem (until I was so deep in it was too late to stop) which I partially attribute to the general content feeling that opis give, which makes it easy to ignore things that would normally make you think twice and cause concern.

Sherminator, I mainly take the meds for pain. I do like the "high" they give me, but that's just a nice side effect. I don't take them every day because if I do they don't work as effectively. I'll go a few days or even a week without the hydrocodone, maybe just 1 Tramadol here and there, but I save the hydrocodone for after my procedures (I get epidural steroid shots in my back for the pain. They help somewhat but not as much as I was hoping for. I think it's really my fault, my family expects me to carry on same as before so I do, carrying around my 20 pound 15 month old son and doing all the housework. It's terrible for my back.) The shot are every two weeks so I just save up my meds and binge for 2-3 days after them because then I'm really sore.

I was just hoping to have a backup supply of something stronger just in case I needed it. I know opiates are really addictive and I'm trying to be cautious. But I thought it wouldn't hurt to have some extra meds lying around? I'm in an awful lot of pain...

Personally, I would increase the hydrocodone before doing the oxycodone. I'm assuming the oxy is long acting. For me the oxys made me absolutely exhausted but others I'm sure have different experiences. An 80 mg tablet is a high dose. Your family needs to help out with your baby. Carrying 20 pounds is not helping your back as you know.

as said above, increase the hydrocodone dose or lower it and combine with 5mg oxycodone BUT dont go over 5mg of oxy because you will become really addicted and living with real pain...and remember the amount of acetaminophen intake, your liver's enemy

Dude, get the eff out of this mess now!!!

I was exactly where you are this time last year. In a few months similar situations happened and I was doing 100 mg / day. Then I quit QT and I was completly fucked for a good month.

Fast forward to 6 months ago. When I thought I could just have a couple. In just a couple months I was up to 300 mg/day + . It happens so very fast and the 2nd time is way harder. I'm now in a sub taper program. Almost got rid of this ball and chain.

Please please just try to not do any for a couple days and see what happens. If you feel like crap, rife it out and get as far away as possible. never go back!!

Please man. This is the point of no return. Take that OC80 and it's over for you. BTW that will most likely make you sick.

Take care.

First of all, I'm not a dude, I'm a girl. Second of all, I CAN'T flush all my opiates as I genuinely need them for pain. I understand that they're addictive, but I can't spend my whole day lying in bed because I have so much pain. I have 3 children to take care of and my family, who KNOWS I've been down this road before with legally prescribed and used exactly as prescribed benzos, is encouraging me to take the meds because they DON'T WANT TO HELP WITH MY CHILDREN. Well, so if you want something done you've got to do it yourself. I MUST take meds to get through my day, and I use the hydros sparingly, it's just that my level of pain has been steadily increasing since August, and I am nervous about asking for my hydrocodone dosage to be raised because where I go to at this pain management clinic they get all kinds of crazies and they're hyper-alert to "drug seeking behavior." I'd rather keep quiet and deal with it on my own...sigh.

After 25 yrs of being an opiate addict I would really suggest you avoid progressing down the hell-hole of dependancy to addiction. It is a horrible life. I am still on the liquid handcuffs of methadone and am not able to do anything spontaneous without going through the hassle of multiple prescriptions from my Dr. Just to go out of town overnight is a nightmare hassle.

The issue with tolerance is that your body is becoming used to the drug, which is the first step in physical dependency.

I hear you on the pain. I am out of my pills(two weeks early of course) and my neck is absolutely killing me. Winter had to come and pain gets so much worse. Damn you winter, damn you. Reminds me of why I'm on all these damn drugs to begin with.
