Hey guys, im new here but I find this site is helping me as I am dealing with addiction and want to help others as well as gain knowledge from all of you. Ill get to the point. Ive been on and off opiates for a while and got hooked on tramadol after gaining access to it from a friend. Im tapering off slowly with my doctor. I have also been given prozac which is helping with my depression. However, ive been taking valium for my insomnia and seem to be substituting one drug for another. This worries me. Can anyone relate or offer some advice on how let go of the addicting substances and prevent relapse? Id appreciate any inputs. Thanks!

^That's good advice. :)

Some other things that might help you is to let your doctor know about your worries. They'll be able to wean you off of the valium as well and advise you on other methods that might work for you. I'd suggest that you surround yourself with sober people and to try to immerse yourself in a new hobby (or one that you've been wanting to pick back up again). I find that when I'm idle, I crave drugs the most so I try to keep somewhat busy so my mind is occupied with other things. Keep us updated and let us know how you're doing. All the best. <3

Thank a lot for your inputs. Helping others has really driven me away from the tramadol as a drug itself, and getting back into my music will keep me from using the drug for boredom. I think over time I can try these pieces of advice. Your comment about telling the doctor is important because its easy to self medicate but its not always safe. I do worry about the physical need my body has for this tramadol. Im a chef and work very long hours. I think yoga may possibly help me. I will see my doc soon and let ya know how it goes. Namaste.

Getting off valium before it gets to be a problem is a good idea. Do you find that the need for the Tramadol is more physical than psychological?

Yoga and mindfulness practice is really helpful for me. Before I started practicing mindfulness, I used to be consumed by my fears and anxiety. Just learning to observe my feelings, to almost study them as they are happening, has freed me to think about them in new ways.

What kind of food do you make?:)

That great advice. I am using the valium right now mostly so that I can sleep since tapering off the tramadol is painful and makes me completely restless. My doctor has given me meloxicam for the restlessness and talked about giving me some form of muscle relaxer to sleep. However, I am consumed with fear and racing thoughts as I try to go to sleep. This is why the valium has come in handy. But I really cant let that become yet another thing to get addicted to. Yoga seems to way to go for me, I enjoy it. What kind of yoga do you practice and how often do you practice? I feel like I would need it everyday! Oh, and I am a currently a pastry chef at a downtown restaurant, so I make a lot of French and Italian desserts! Lots of crème brulee and bête noir...but I also love to bake cakes and make dessert sauces :)
