Ok now that i'm in college, my old school coat hanger presentations don't really apply to me anymore, lol. I've gone all out at wallmart, buying a nice 3 column poster board, markers, glue etc. Since I'm not doing a power point, I'm going to have to capture my audience with the poster. My presentation is on my university's student discipline policy. (since I was a trouble maker in grade school I choose this because I have first hand experience. :) ). What I really need help with is what to include on it. I have my note cards, and have done ALOT of research on this. Now is a poster board supposed to have diagrams on it? What about statistics? The college handbook is pretty straight forward with the discipline policy. I'd like to make it a little cheerful. I'm not asking you to do this for me, just maybe your experience with it? Helpful suggestions will work! Thanks :)

What course/department is this for? This may help us better assist you with our suggestions.

In general, given the 3-column poster, I would do something like this (I just threw this together for you in paint):

That looks nice ^^^^, The course is a Student Affairs class or should I say, College Success Class. It basicly is a class all the freshman students have to take inorder to take other classes. It's a class about student life, the Do's and Dont's in college. Everyone has to select a Topic to do an essay on. There is one on "Student Life", "Finical Aid", "Clubs and Organizations", and of course "Student Discipline Policy". My class has to select one and do a presentation, and since my other group mates dropped the class I'm doing this one solo. It's not really that hard. It would've been a little easier if I had a group to do this in. It's Auburn University in Montgomery Student Discipline Policy. Like I'm going to discuss : http://www.aum.edu/indexm_ektid7888.aspx It's pretty much self explainatory.
I like the way you explained it redleader. Also I'm useing power point to make this thing, is that wise to do? Also since the presentation isin't all just words should I include pictures? I would ask my teacher, but this is one of those classes where you have to find shit out for your self.
Thanks!!!!

Wait, I thought you said you were making a poster, and not a Power Point slideshow? I am confused? If you're using Power Point as a program to write in (and then print out and glue to the poster), why not use Word instead? If for nothing else, it will look cleaner when printed out.

As for pictures, well only if they are essential. If your presentation would be clearly lacking clarification without it/them. Pictures are easier to inclide in a slide-show, since you can quickly fly through them. On a poster, though, they can look too large and such. More often than not, though, pictures = attempting to fill up space. Charts/graphs are good. If you interview people, maybe get a (small) photo of them and put it next to their quotes. Or put a small photo near the heading (your name, title, etc.)

^^ I am making a poster/presentation. I've asked around and I was told power point is best to make a presentation. Allthough it's all going to be printed out and glued to a posterboard. Since everyone else in my class is doing a power-point, I'd want to do a poster. I figure something with the lights off will make people tired when I'm doing my presentation. Thats why I choose to do a poster.

I started off with microsoft word, everything looked really small and looked like a letter. I'm useing microsoft to write my essay on the student discipline policy. I guess I'm not to pro when it comes down the diffrent styles. Microsoft Word 2007 is just so confuseing. I know what you mean. Maybe later down the road. ;)
I have it figured out now. The powerpoint thing is making thinking of things a little easyer. Now when it comes down to printing, is a ''Slide" going to take up a page? or will it put the entire powerpoint on a page??
thanks

Keep the info on the poster to a mimimum, dont swamp it with text... Just include brief bullet points and talk around the bullet points when you present it...

And practise, alot... Even it it means just standing in your room on your own presenting to yourself. You will feel stupid doing it (well, I did anyway) but actually rehearshing your presentation shows to you any bits that you may stumble at and saves you getting tounge tied and flustered when the big day finally comes around...

Good luck, once you actually get into the swing of it you'll be fine...

Did I put to many pictures in this powerpoint slide?

Hey, So I finished my power point. There's one thing that stands out. The pictures! I wanted it to look really cool. I didn't want to over do it with the pictures. The presentation is on my schools disciple code. Since I don't want people to fall asleep I wanted to put some "Oomph" into it. Like in my other thread I said I was going to put all of this on a nice big cardboard poster board. I know that if I turn the lights off and the power point going, it would put people asleep. I have to put myself in my professor position and see what he see's. Tell me what you think.

thanks again.. :-)

Also, If you were doing a poster board, how would you decorate it? Like would you paint the background a different color? Put different color construction papers behind each slide? Put bells and whistles all on it? Just give some pointers on how you would do a poster board project. Thanks :-) <3

Is that seriously a slide you're going to use? Nobody in the class is going to be able to read it. Plus, if you're saying you don't want to overdo it with the pictures I think you need to take like almost all of them off.

OK, constructive criticism… as your slide looks as posted above, it's way too busy for your audience to digest. If you're going to do a PP presentation, break the slide above into a series. Start with a title page with a few graphics. The Biohazard and Gothic type "Discipline" graphics will get people's attention. Those would be good choices for your title page.

Then break the body of text above in to 2 or 3 more text-based slides with a few of your bullet points. Those rectangular graphics at the top of the page may be used on these slides. Arrange them in a line at the bottom of the page so that they don't distract from the text points.

If you want to use all your graphics to keep the interest of the audience, create a few graphics-only slides to intersperse between the text-based slides you've already created. The two objectives to keep in mind are: (1) to keep your audiences' attention and, (2) to not overwhelm them with data.

If you will be one presenter out of ten people presenting that day, most of the audience will be asleep. So I do think you're on the right track in using pictures to grab people's attention. Just try to keep your layouts as minimal as possible.

If you go for a posterboard, keep the same text content but just throw out a few of the graphics, again keeping in mind that too much information will not be digested by the audience. Don't make it too busy!

I just looked at your slide again and to start, I'd say get rid of the blue arrows pointing towards the bulletpoints. You don't need them, people already know to look to the middle of the slide for the main content. Good luck with your presentation!

Thanks artaxerxes.

I'm doing it on a poster board. I'll take a picture of it tonight. I got with my group. and we fucking worked on it. It was awesome. I choose the poster board b/c it wont put people asleep. I have a "Dip Stick" if anyone tries to fall asleep.. It's a nice 3 column cardboard poster board. one that can fold in and out, and can stand up on its own. Thursday we are going to get together at 1:30 before class @ 3:00 and make note cards, and finish the poster hopefully. I've got one of those mallet things that I could tape to the poster. That would be cool.

I'll post a pic of it 2 morrow.

thanks guys :)
