two part question here:

1)
So I know THC is only slightly soluble in water which is good if you use a bong. However, I was thinking the other day I wonder if there is a way to completely keep it from being absorbed into the water of the bong. Since THC is basically non-polar could this be done by saturating the water in the bong with another easily obtainable substance? If this is plausible what could be used?

2)
This question is very similar to the one above, but here it goes. So I put my bong in my freezer every day before I smoke out of it to cool the smoke down more. One day i decided hey I'm gonna put salt in the water too so that the water can remain a liquid below 0 degrees C. How will the salt effect the smoke as it passes through the bong? will the salt help the water hold on to more THC or will it prevent that?

thanks guys. any help will be appreciated

i would say that the salt would saturate the water more preventing it from absorbing more thc... but i'm just sayin.

well I was wondering the same thing. you could use something non-polar like cooking oil to saturate the water with a non-polar substance. but the question with that is would the water mix with the oil and saturate it or would it only cause the oil that you added to grab even more THC?

1) No. Furthermore, it is not so much THC that water is leeching as it is CBD / other cannabinoids from the cannabis that cause that oh-so-lovely "couch lock" feeling...

2) If anything, it would stay the same or waste more.

The bottom line is that the THC / CBD being leeched by the water is negligible, like 1%-2%. You are wasting more THC by using a butane lighter and burning the substance. If you are concerned about conservation, you should ditch the bong and grab a vaporizer (I understand that you know this, just saying...)

1) THC is partly soluble in water because the oxygen molecules impart a polar charge that creates hydrogen bonds when exposed to water. the end result is that highly polar gunk in the smoke stays in the water while the mostly non-polar thc escapes into the chamber and up into your lungs carrying some water vapour with it. had i paid more attention in chem, i'd know whether any THC actually gets trapped in the water but it's doubtful given the weak attraction in the first place.

2) as mentioned it wont affect the thc itself but you might end up with some salt in your smoke which would be fucking nasty and pointless because the surface area of the smoke/bubbles is what determine how well it's filtered, not water density. hence why people buy bubblers and diffusers to get more filtering instead of putting salt in their water.

first of all the colder the water the less thc is absorbed but thats ok youre probably losing more thc to resin in the bong. but also water at room temperature absorbs more carcinogens so better on your lungs and thc is not soluble in water at any temp so any stuck in water is result of what thujone mentioned. also resin builds more quickly on side of cold glass so the colder the bong the more condensation on the sides. putting salt in it sounds nasty but if u can stand it go for it. the one thing cooling the smoke down does do is reduce the heat of the ash entering your lungs but if the smoke gets frosted it ends up being worse. if you want icy cool hits without frosting smoke buy a glycerine coil theyre getting cheap as hell.

the amount that thc degrades in water isnt worth the effort, really. is a rediculously small amount.

dont smoke through salty water as you will damage your lungs.

oh and dont freeze your bong with water in it unless you wanna buy a new one.

dspade, thank you for posting about thc being lost to resin, a guy I know swears by keeping his bong almost blocked all the time. 'GET PHAT HITS MATE BIIG RESIN TOKES'

Yeah he's an idiot, but thanks for shutting him up. :)
