Got a linksys WRT54G tried the basic reset with power off and shit http://www.systemdisc.com/how-do-i-reset-linksys-router-default-password there. I also did this 'super-mega-ulta-cool-super' reset that linksys tells people only to use as a last resort, as if unplugging your router a few more times than the standard method is going to hurt it. Every time I plug it back in it either asks for a firmware update, and when I do that it just restores settings, password, WEP password, etc.
I'm trying to do it because my fucknut friend came over and got into it and set the password to something he won't tell me so I NEED to reset it to get access to forward ports for some programs I use.

Anyone have advice?
I've also tried different firmware, it all does the same thing, sometimes it doesn't even ask for firmware update when I go to 192.168.1.1 and just goes straight to asking for the old password I still don't have(tried admin and other shit, but I know it's the same because it keeps the network name and shit on it which would only stay there if the firmware weren't actually installing freshly).

And for the fuck of it I just held the reset button down while I was plugging and unplugging for about 5 minutes straight and I let the button up after that and it's still being a firmwarewhore.

Also don't argue with me saying it's just my computer remembered the network name, because the wifi password is the same too, but I usually use ethernet.

Ask yourself that question. I have the same router. The hard reset button is on the back of the router, and holding it in for a long time is the only way to clear the whole thing. Don't unplug the router while you're doing that, that might have been where you went wrong. Just hold that button in for 30 seconds and you should be good. If that doesn't work then you need to ask Linksys, not Bluelight.

steal something of value from your fucknut friend, and tell him if you don't get the password before you get to the pawnshop, his shit is turning into a new router.

I made it to best buy with his $150 cell phone and recycled it :D. That funded a really nice new router with money left for other crap.

Actually, unplugging the router is part of the "super-mega-ultra-cool-super" reset he was referring to.

Glad to hear you at least got a new router out of the deal, but as a geek it is my responsibility to inform you just how awesome the WRT54G can be if you take a few minutes to get it running again...

This page features a few different methods of bringing a brick back to life. The first method should do the trick.

Once you have it back up and running, check out the DD-WRT or Tomato (I recommend Tomato, but that's just me) firmwares that can basically turn your basic factory router into a sweet, fully customizable high end machine.
