Indeed. Additionally, I don't think, say, dogs or cats need to breathe in a large amount of the smoke, even in proportion to their weight and tolerance, etc. in order to get stoned. If you take a rip that's big enough to give your pet a "proper" hit upon exhaling (i.e., their head is enveloped in a cloud of smoke for a quick second or so), the smoke will likely find its way into their ears. If you've ever looked in a dogs ear for example, you can see the blood vessels in it. Supposedly, the highly-vascular nature of most pet's ears make them a viable ROA for second-hand weed smoke, especially because most pets don't enjoy the actual act of breathing in the smoke, like we humans do.
Anyway, this is just what I've heard, I don't have scientific evidence to back it up.
I recomend not exhaling a hit that directly into your pet's face (I'm not accusing you of recomending it either, I just wanted to put this out there). Keep in mind they don't know what it is, so their only thoughts if it hurt would be panic and pain.
Here's how to get an animal stoned (some animals can't get stoned, getting birds stoned will kill them for instance)- make pot food and feed them an incredably small dose. A dose that wouldn't even buzz a human (vary it based on the size of the animal, go low the first times). See how they react. If smoke if all you've got exhale hits from 2-4 feet away very, very slowly towards the animal. If you do it properly they won't notice the smoke at all. Oral hash works well too, but it has to be hidden like a pill because it tastes bad.
In my experience cats sometimes like getting stoned, sometimes hate it. If you exhale a hit that hurts them they'll be pissed off and leave usually. I've never seen a dog have a bad time on pot, ever. Think about it, dogs have the perfect personality for someone who loves pot (usually)- they're silly, stupid, and usually happy. If an animal has a bad reaction to pot don't give it any anymore, but oftentimes animals love it (just like people), in which case it improves their quality of life.
Also- that's incredably cool about the puppies, good to know. You should give them bowl hits instead, because blunts have tobacco, which is extremly toxic to animals and can cause some damage. Bowl hits are also smaller, so they're less likely to cause pain for the animal, and they won't cause pain if given properly. The key is to exhale extremly, extremly slowly towards the animal's face so that they only get a slight stream of smoke instead of a big cloud of pain.
That's incredably cool about ears, I'm going to look into that more because it's probably the coolest thing I've heard today. I wish humans could take ear hits, imagine how much greater hotboxes would be...
