aka... what's your favorite 80s tunes. if need be tell how you came about them.

reason being. i missed major tom, by peter schilling. i always loved the david bowie character "major tom" but never realized more artists worked with major tom. one being peter schilling who sang "major tom (coming home), then recently shiny toy cars made a remix of it for a mercedez commercial. now the song is huge and some of the older versions are getting bigger. well i particularly LOVE the 1983 version by peter schilling it's AWESOME!

other than that though, i'm quite a fan of 80s new wave such as tears for fears, joy division, new order, human league, autobahn, peter schilling, aphaville, etc. who else should i be listening to?

good recommendation i've listened to them, but have never gotten into them enough to be a huge fan. i'll have to check them out more. i also dig depeche mode. :D

INXS, Tom Petty, The Cure, Metallica, Motley Crue, Def Leopard, Men at Work, The Outfields, Fleetwood Mac... I could go on and on. Great decade of music!

EDIT: Oh yeah, and Aha! (Take on me!)

I'm going to echo some people with my list.

I was into Quiet Riot, Van Halen, Def Leppard, Men At Work, Duran Duran, Huey Lewis, YAZ, The Cure, and of course The Grateful Dead......just to name a few :)

Huey Lewis and the News?

Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humour.

Phil Collins?

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where, uh, Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist.

I think Costello has the same sense, he's just more English about it. Even though he's not English.

Fun fact: Huey played with some members of the pub-rock band Clover who incidentally played on Costello's first record, My Aim Is True, before he even had a regular band to work with. Other than that, not really sure where the Costello comparisons come from as I am not as familiar with Lewis' stuff as I am with Costello's.

The Pixies, The Smiths, The Cure, Phil Collins, New Order, Lou Reed, Talking Heads, Joy Division, Fleetwood Mac. All freaking awesome. I may have been too young to truly appreciate them during their actual era's, but I sure appreciate the fuck out of them now. ;)
