MULTIVITAMINS- best brand? does it even matter?

Any one in the UK know the quality of poundland vitamins? Are all vitamins subject to some kind of quality/safety testing?

For those not in the UK Poundland is a packed store where you can get some wicked stuff for a quid!!!

Multi vitamins are NOT a good choice.

For a number of reasons.

Predominantly is that Humans are not "one size fits all"

Often as well, there is too much vitamin A. Westerners are NOT vitamin A deficient, and usually are vitamin D3 deficient.

Vitamin D3 is the holy grail of vitamins, it is also a precursor to hormones and neurotransmitters.

Vitamin A fights vitamin D3, and the FDA recently reported that most americans are close to Vitamin A toxicity. While most are Vitamin D3 deficient (obviously).

Vitamins that you need:

NON SYNTHETIC ANYTHING

B vitamins- humans do not produce enough naturally
Vitamin E - helps the body assimilate Progesterone as well as other fat soluble vitamins/hormones, skin, hair, nails.
A good Calicium - Mag, & Phosphorus ratio. I recommend New Mark BotaniCal - the most excellent Calcium supplement on the market.
CoQ-Quinol - NON SYNTHETIC - required for cardiovascular function

Vitamin D3 - 1-2,000 IU/day

Again Westerners DO NOT need a Vitamin A supplement- specially in ANY Fish or Flax oils!!!

Omegas can be consumed by WILD CAUGHT Salmon, eggs, coconut oil, and extra virgin olive oil.

^ I think it does because theres too much placebos in the supplement world, so i wouldnt say all multivitamins are the same.

I just take the flintstones gummies that my kids take....lol.

Most multi-vitamins are huge and I have trouble swallowing them.

I wasn't sure how to word this in google so I didn't find any satisfactory results. My question is, I usually take a centrum chewable a - z vitamin but recently ran out. My Mum actually picked up some more for me while she was out one day but accidentally grabbed centrum silver chewables. I'm only 25. Now I'm know they aren't going to kill me, obviously. And I'm assuming wouldn't be harmful. It mostly seems as though there are either higher or lower percentages of the same vitamin or mineral. There are a couple things that are not in the silver that are in the general everyday vitamin. Anyway, my question is should I just go on taking these, would there be any benefits even? Or should I just stop being lazy and go exchange them for my regular vitamin. Or perhaps even something else.

Ah...finally an opinion on vitamin that I can agree with. It has been my personal experience that multivitamins DO NOT make me feel any better, in fact, they make me have to pee more so I interpret this as my body working harder to pass what it doesn't want/need, or can't absorb into the system. Yet my partner swears by them, expensive or cheap she feels that they help her feel healthier. Each person is different. The best way to find out which ones are best for you is to try different ones.

Although I think there is no replacement or substitution for eating a balanced diet. When I eat right for my blood type ;), I don't need vitamins at all.

I don't make as big a fuss about taking a multi every day as I used to - but I think that, given the average state of most people's food, it's not a bad practice to maintain at least semi-regularly. Certainly it's preferable to get our essential nutrients from our diet - but food today is lacking in many of those nutrients due to monoculture/overfarming, spraying it with poison, unripe harvesting, etc. - basically, corporate agriculture has really messed up the health giving potential of a lot of the food we eat. Sure, it'll still provide you with the same calories, but that's not all you need. Obesity is usually linked to an excess of calories, and it ain't healthy!

Even if it's not organic, certainly do your best to eat tons of fruit and vegetables, but especially if you don't take any supplements. I actually appreciate all the thoughts on different brands of vitamins in this thread, I think I have some reviewing to do.

I don't want to pimp any particular products, but some of the most immediate differences I've felt have been, not from taking a multi (though it probably helps over time), but from "superfoods" or "whole foods" - certain algaes, fruits, sprouts, etc.

Thanks for all the advice, all who've posted so far!

I think superfood powders made from freeze-dried fruits and veggies (even mushrooms!) are best and that's what I use nowadays. Added to that I use D3 and B-complex when needed.

To the person talking about vitamin-rich urine... that's incorrect. I can snort a line of blow and then have cocaine-rich urine several hours later... that does NOT mean it was not active in my body. Follow? :)

I think the superfood powders and drinks are awesome as well. I do take a multi on a daily basis. I have to say that since I've been taking a good quality multi and a probiotic on a daily basis, I have noticed a vast improvement in my health. I rarely get colds now, and when I do they are very mild (used to get them all the time). I do think quality is important for multis, and I think women should take a women's multi, and men should likewise take a men's one. There is a difference in the things they need. And I have read in several different places that Centrum vitamins don't absorb well into the system, and are often found whole with the writing still on them in the sewers.

there was a study done and they said that "Centrum" was the best. I will try and get a reference, just google it and you should find some info

Unsure about exactly what you're seeking, before getting any medication or herbs you must consult with a doctor. To find out more or to become knowledgeable you can go through some great sites like WebMD etc ... also you can get a free e-book on multi vitamin here http://www.multivitaminstruth.com
