In my opinion it is Master and Commander. This movie gets tons of praise and is up for a crap ton of oscars and it was just horrible. It was so boring and everything in the entire film could have been done better.

It wasn't the worst movie I have ever seen but there are a lot of movies that came out this year that were a lot better and they are not up for Best Picture

I agree with you there. Even the previews looked boring!

Kill Bill Vol 1.

Why is every critic so in love with anything Tarantino makes?
I think it is because it is "cutting edge" and they are afraid of him because they know he will attack their opinions.

I highly doubt that the media is AFRAID of quentin tarantino.

i really enjoyed Kill Bill.. so :p

I can't think of what was overrated that I saw personally.. hmm

Die Another Day. The first Brosnan Bond film in which I was unable to suspend my disbelief (Cf. the invisible car)

^^ the only bond movie I had no desire to see.

Seabiscuit was pretty damn awful, though that could be because i got a free ticket and saw it in a cinema full of senior citizens who clapped with frail hands whenever the horse pulled ahead. Damn senior's week.

personally, i think everyone loves tarantino's work because a) he's a master of dialogue (most people will rightly tell you that this is his forte) and b) he has an amazing penchant for style.

of course, tarantino isn't the most original director, but i think this is more an indication of the role of post-modernity within the cinema today, than anything else. as most people know, tarantino spent his years before directing working at a video store, constantly watching films and building an ardent admiration for the craft.

it follows, then, that much of his work is the re-interpretation of his favourite films, and that much of what we're seeing has been thematically (and stylistically) explored before. that said, tarantino doesn't out-and-out copy; rather, he takes bits and pieces from all over the place, and filters it through his own personal film-making talent, coming out with some of the smartest and most enjoyable films around.

i guess i can see why some people aren't a fan of his, but i would argue against them until my dying day. i've seen a shitload of films too, and though i consider myself a reasonably intelligent guy, that doesn't necessarily translate into the ability to make brilliant films on par with qt's - the guy might constantly reference his knowledge base of cinema, but he's still awesomely talented.

I thought 21 grams was a bit overated... I did enjoy it, excellent performances from all concerned... Just thought it was overated is all......

I enjoye Kill Bill for what it was, a black comedy basically..... if you can't laugh @ the violence & find it funny, then of course you aren't going to like it..... thats just Tarantino's style..... agreed - master of dialogue..... & WAY OVER THE TOP violence... hehe

4 letters for you....

SWAT

What a piece of shit!!

I have to also agree with Die Another Day. That movie was more like a comedy. After the first scene, I could tell this movie was going to be painfully horrible.... and it was.

Matrix... All of them were overrated but the latest one was the biggest load of tripe i've willingly subjected myself to for the last three years :p

^^^ yeah, i totally agree (well, actually, i thought that reloaded was worse than revolutions, but they both sucked so who really cares :)) - these films were so horribly dissapointing.

however, i don't know if they're over-rated as such: they were when they first came out (i had so many arguments with people who were still somehow convinced of the films' excellence), but now the general consensus seems to have swung back around to them being shit, as is often the case with big blockbuster releases.

i don't know why people allow themselves to get caught up in the hype (only to change their mind later on), when they were so obviously shit :\

i'm surprised no one's brought up "lost in translation yet". not because i think it's overrated, i love it, but because i've recently come across a lot of people who got on the train late after hearing from everybody about how great it was and then being let down.

haha, how in the hell did i forget Matrix. Wow, what a complete overhyped disappointment.

blakemore: that's 'cause most of us round here are damn intelligent (;)) and know a good film when we see it!

heh, check out the lost in translation thread here...i think there's a couple of dissenters.

I liked some of his movies, Pulp Fiction was a classic also few others, however Kill Bill does not have the "suspense of disbelief" you need in the movies, any movie that mixes cartoons/anime into the main story loses any "movie feel" to me.
Not to mention the outrageous and unrealistic sword fight at the end of the movie. You're just kind of sitting there laughing but you can't really "get into" the movie. It's like watching a sunday night cartoon for kids.

What a piece of shit!!

I thought we were talking about overrated movies! I think it's universally recognised that SWAT was total shit :)

Personally I found Phone Booth really mind numbing, although it still received decent reviews from a lot of critics. The whole movie I sat there just wanting the main character to cop it straight between the eyes, so it was frustrating more than anything else. ;)
