just curious as to what your qualifications/backrounds/compensations are for this site...how did you gain these positions? what are your qualifications? do you get paid?
 
People have to throw their hat in to the ring and then be chosen by a group of existing mods and admins....and no, nobody gets paid.....as far as I know.
 
It is all a secret...........:) No we are a community of people who have common goals.....harm reduction....making sure people get solid information on mind altering chemicals....alot of us have degrees, some don't, but we all have P.H.D.'s in knowledge and harm reduction!
 
Yep, it is entirely volunteer staff.

Every mod was a Bluelighter first. The background qualification was familiarity with the subjects of the forum they mod & useful/helpful participation within that forum.

This post would have better gone in Support since you are asking a question about the site as a whole.

For most forums it is a volunteer job. I don't know of any forum I frequent that it is a paid gig.

I helped mod a friend's forum til she shut it down, what a thankless job of bs that was. A lot of behind the scenes dealing with personalities and whining that really made me want to slap people across the internet.

Therefore, Thank you to our mods/admins for doing what they do.

Well I meant the problem/annoyance of moderating came typically from the posters. Complaints about why they were temp banned, or a comment was removed, or why the forum didn't have a feature that some other forum had, blah blah. It's typically just a thankless hassle. But certainly rewarding if it is a topic you feel strongly about.
 
People seem to mistake moderators for experts on the particular forums they moderate. Yeah, some do have really good knowledge on the subjects of their forums, but their main "job" is just to enforce the rules on Bluelight... closing inappropriate threads, moving threads to other forums, deleting spam, and so on. And no, they don't get paid. If they did, I'd be the first to apply to become a moderator! ;)
 
yea id like to say thanks also so far your knowledge as been both helpful and extensive so thank you for your time....just curious as to how it worked

In most forums when a position is open there will be a post in that forum asking for applicants and a cut off date for applications will be given.

The current moderators of that forum will read through the applicants and search all of their posts in that forum. This is why making good quality replies and starting good discussions in a forum is useful. You can only really be judged on your previous posts and general behaviour around the website. It is expected that people applying for moderator positions will have been around for a few months as this should mean you have a better idea of how things work. Individual forums may have different application processes; for example some might ask various questions of applicants.

Can I just help out in forums anyway?

Yes, people are actively encouraged to help moderators out by providing useful information for people who require it and pointing people in the right direction. This is one of the things that makes Bluelight unique as a community, people are always willing to help others and share information.

Well, I was about to dig up some links to the FAQs that are out there so people can find the answers for themselves....but I see alasdair beat me to it ... again. Next time, I'll just see if Ali has replied, and consider it closed, because he nailed it.
 
Also from that same FAQ:
Moderator is a customized title for staff members who are the leaders of the forum(s) that appear under their title. Moderators earned their positions by being active participants and are expected to continue to contribute to their forums. Moderators are responsible for enforcing the rules so on Bluelight. They can close threads, edit posts and warn users in their assigned forum. In addition, all Pillreports.com staff members are given the title of moderator at Bluelight.

Senior Moderator is a customized title for staff members who moderate at least one forum and help respond to issues across all of Bluelight. They will address urgent problems, help make judgment calls when they are sufficiently familiar with the situation and provide backup for the normal forum moderators. Senior Moderators will have basic moderator functions across all the public forums. They will be able to give warnings, and can issue bans when needed. Senior Moderators will be on a level between Admins and Moderators. Senior Moderators will help provide coverage and advice, but are not supervisors.

Administrator is a customized title for staff members who oversee the operation of Bluelight as a whole. Administrators can perform the basic moderator functions in all forums and can ban people from Bluelight. They respond to urgent situations, resolve disputes and address complaints and might moderate one or more specific forums in addition to being an administrator. They create internal policies and deal with external matters such as public relations and legal issues. They are responsible for adding or removing staff members but delegate a great deal of freedom and authority to the moderators. Administrators make the ultimate decisions for what happens at Bluelight.
