I have never really used the crossfader. I've tried myhand and scratching and using the crossfader for different things trying to figure out a good way to use it, but I just haven't found a reason with my "style" - and I play everything from DnB, breaks, house even *gasp* progressive / trance. The only time I really use it is if I'm just listening to my records at home to listen to them when I first buy them. But usually I'll just have both faders up and the x-fader in the middle and not care about the clashing or off-beat noise.
Maybe I spoiled myself since I bought a Xone 62 and can work the EQs to get the sound I want or I can move my hands fast enough with the eqs and faders not to worry about the cross fader at all - which I only turn on if I want to mess with the filter a bit - which does come in handy for getting rid of some of the clashing sounds with bass-heavy tracks.
If you can use the crossfader and it sounds good - then that's excellent. The main gripes I've heard about the crossfader is that it can bleed between channels if it's old and / or well-used or you just have a mixer that's substandard.
