Mixing "heavy" and "light" sedatives (neuroleptics)

For the past couple of weeks, I have been mixing antipsychotics with GABAergic's. The two I've been mixing are 80MG's of Geodon (Ziprazidone) and 20MG's of Ambien (Zolpidem) every night.

There is no better medication tha I've ever been on than Ambien for putting me to sleep. It eliminates all of my pre-sleep anxiety as well as making me fall asleep within minutes of laying my head down. However, it's half-life is way too short. It can keep me asleep for around 4-5 hours at most and then I wake up with awful restless legs like I usually have.

The Geodon was prescribed for psychotic symptoms, not sleep. It is, like most antipsychotics, extremely sedating in its own right and has a half-life in the 9 hour range. It helps keep me asleep, but doesn't do anything for anxiety or help me fall asleep. It does however keep me asleep most nights.

This combination is working better than Diphenhydramine + Zolpidem and the Ambien seems to counteract many of the unpleasant side-effects associated with antipsychotics.

However, I am wondering if there's any significant danger in mixing these two, powerful sedatives?

I have noticed one very predominant side-effect with this combination. The Ambien alone at 20MG's doesn't give me blackouts because my tolerance is at a high enough level it isn't doing that. However, when taken with the Geodon, I am experiencing blackouts. And not occasional blackouts, but blackouts EVERY NIGHT.

I literally remember nothing past 30 minutes after I take my meds. I've been told by people, however, that I've called them in the middle of the night, I wake up to find food by my bed, and I find my computer on in the morning. And i am finding this EVERYNIGHT and have no recollection of doing any of it.

Should I be woried about this? I know bad things can happen in a blackout, so I'm going to talk about it with my psychiatrist next week. But I'm not sure if I should be more conceded about this or not. What does everyone else think?

I got a driving under the influence conviction blacking out on Ambien. Blackouts are not highly recommended. I'd look for an alternative medication if you really need the Geodon.

I had to give up on ambien due to blackouts. At first, if it didn't work I would wake up thinking I took a second dose and wake up to find that I took several more. When I realized that ambien only works on an empty stomach (hungry) it worked much better. Then I would wake up to a messy kitchen because I wanted to eat after it kicked in but before bed.

What made me realize that it was dangerous was when I fell asleep with a piece of pizza in the oven & almost caused a fire. I still will take one occasionally but blackouts are too scary. I also have made nonsensical middle of the night phone calls. Luckily I never got into the car!
