MICHIGAN CITY — Michigan City Police say they derailed an effort by one man they believe was trying to take over the local heroin market, after a recent bust.

Timothy Warren, 33, could face as much as a 50-year prison sentence if convicted of Class A felony possession of a schedule I substance with intent to deliver.

Police said information was received Thursday indicating Warren was heading back from an undisclosed location with a large amount of heroin.

During a traffic stop in the 5200 block of Franklin Street, police said they recovered from his vehicle 31 grams of heroin inside 128 packets along with more than $2,000 in cash.

Warren, at the time, was residing at a motel on Franklin Street just north of U.S. 20, police said.

Since the arrests of 11 alleged heroin and cocaine dealers on May 20, Michigan City Police Detective Dave Legros said, Warren had been under investigation and it appeared he was attempting to take over the business of the heroin dealers that were taken into custody.

dude 31 g's of heroin? a "take over"? Maybe i'm doing my math wrong but 31 grams= 10 bags per gram x 31 grams = a whopping 310 bags? (well on the second read i realized 128 bags...anyway) which would last a single dope/crack house about 2-3 days (just a guess)....edit: shit 128 bags would last one spot one day...maybe not even a whole day, even if the bags weighed .24 g's.

Actually i bet they were dime bags, but the cops weighed the bag with the dope. 8)
ok i give up. this guy was small time however you fuck up the math/twist the facts. and while someone was writing this article and the cops were high five-ing each other, half a dozen new spots probably opened and theres probably a few dozen new ghetto kids making mad money slingin dope.

edit: and this guy is facing 50 years in prison? when he probably was barely clearing enough money to support his habit and make rent.

It reminds me of the plot to the movie/book L.A. Confidential. The police arrest/intimidate all dealers and would be dealers in one location, and run the dope market themselves.

Theres always something more to busts like this, where a very, very small time dealer (this guy) are made out to be some kind of kingpin. Higher up's don't even touch the dope, they just make phone calls. This poor bastard is probably taking the heat for his boss. Or, he is a dumbass who thought he could make some money moving in someone elses (well protected) turf. Prisons are full of wannabe kingpins.
