Background:

I used to be a .5-1g/day meth addict (smoking). This was about 3 years ago (when I finally stopped the daily use). I've used a few times since then, but only one binge every 6-12 months when I can afford it. Right now, I CAN'T afford it (fuck, I can't even afford cigarettes, let alone meth), and my cravings are SO intense right now. . .

Just wondering if there's ways to make cravings subside once they've been triggered...

Psychology always focuses on triggers, but what do you do once those triggers have been hit?

Think about how crappy it feels to be coming off of the stuff, and remember that it's going to make any pain issues you are experiencing worse than they already are.

Try to find something else that is enjoyable in life (exercise, food, socializing, sex, etc.) and focus on this instead.

Always remember that you do not have to act on cravings. You can choose to do something else (preferably something fun/pleasurable or relaxing etc) instead and the craving will go away in time. This may sound easier said than done but it's something that can be improved upon with practice, it's about being mindful of your thoughts and your reactions to them as opposed to letting your addicted brain trick you into feeling like it's a matter of life and death and you "must" use immediately to make the craving go away. Gradually cravings will have less and less power over you. Does that make sense?

Ya it makes sense...and it's not that it felt like a "life or death" situation...I was just really, really fiendish this morning. An CH...that doesn't help me...like I said...I used to smoke a lot every day despite the horrid comedown lol...I need to work on my coping mechanisms more...and not just in terms of turning off meth cravings...

And oddly, it always kinda helped with the pain...the norepinephrine would make it more tolerable, and the pure stimulation would take my mind off of it...though after the rush, I would be in a lot of pain since I had been in the same position for quite a while without moving...oddly, I don't do anything on the shit...it's almost like heroin to me (though I've never done it). Pain pills on the other hand, make me wanna get up and get shit done...perhaps it's being in a lot less pain that gives me this sort of stimulation?

I believe one of the best ways to prevent cravings is to make sure that you have enough dopamine released. I think that if an addict experiences a high difference in dopamine to dopamine receptor difference it is a motivator for the addiction to begin to motivate use with a much greater push. I believe that if you are having a craving you can reduce the severity of the craving buy causing a dopamine release. To see if this may work for you I would pick up some sort of a snack or candy that is high in sugar fat and salt. All three of those ingredients cause a decent dopamine release when eaten. when you combine them together you get an even greater one. I believe you may be able to reduce a craving buy simply eating something that falls into this category. Then I believe that if you maintain a good dopamine to receptor ratio it should significantly reduce your addiction symptoms. One good place to start is if an addict uses drugs that manipulate the dopamine that aren't their drug of choice the eventual comedown and resultant low dopamine level could trigger the LS to push for the use of the DOC. So i believe if an addict chooses to use other drugs that are not their DOC and are not direct triggers for use the addict must realize that buy heavy enough use they may be inadvertently triggering their addiction. Also an addict can try and keep all the symptoms of addiction at bay buy keeping the dopamine levels high. I believe this may be the cause of the phenomenon called "pink clouding it." I also believe that an addict can do things to keep a pink cloud inflated all the time and live in relative remission from addiction. There are quite a few things an addict can do to mantain a good dopamine level. Many of the activities that create dopamine also have other beneficial results. The following activities have been proven to cause dopamine release and some have been proven or suspected of dopamine production. Aerobic exercise, (works on the serintonan as well) 30 min at least five times a week is the level I do. Meditation has been proven to release dopamine, I do at least twenty minutes every day of the mantra style but pick your own. Sex and orgasm cause a substantial dopanie release and masterbation I believe can be used to try and stop or lessen a craving. setting goals that involve easy to accomplish daily goals, every time we accomplish a goal we get a dopamine release so the more easy obtainable goals you give yourself credit for the better you will feel and IMO the less our addictions will attempt to drive us. Creative expression, or in other words any ting you do that you become so one with that you loose track of time, I write and oil paint, I can write for two hours and when I come back to this world I have little idea how long has elapsed, then I look at what I have written or painted and give myself credit for the accomplishment and get feeling even better.. Down hill skiing is another good one, I have spent seasons doing this and when I ski I totally loos myself and get an insane workout at the same time as well as the sense and dopamine release of an accomplishment.. Sleep, make it a priority to get all the sleep you need as this will promote good neurochemical regulation and as we all know being tired is a course for a trigger. So basically watch any drug use that manipulates dopamine as it will cause a drop possibly becoming a trigger and make dopamine enhancing activities a regular regular part of your life.. If you try it let us know how it goes.. Congratulations on three years that is NO little accomplishment =D

Edit: a couple other things that cause dopamine releases.. hugs (hugs not drugs), feeling accepted, drinking water, caffeine (always on that), thinking about doing pleasurable things (sex, winning the lottery, travelling, etc), thinking about good times with people you love, pictures of your family.

Consider taking a supplement of Phenylalanine and/or tyrosine, Phenylalanine is a precursor for tyrosine, the monoamine signaling molecules dopamine, norepinephrine (noradrenaline), and epinephrine (adrenaline), and the skin pigment melanin. .. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenylalanine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrosine

The precursor for dopamine is the amino acid tyrosine. This essential amino acid enters your body and bloodstream through your diet. An active transport mechanism takes up tyrosine from the bloodstream and concentrates it within the brain (particularly in the substantia nigra, midbrain, and hypothalamus). Once tyrosine enters dopaminergic neurons (dopamine-releasing neurons), a series of chemical transformations take place to ultimately produce dopamine. In the neuron, the enzyme tyrosine hydroxylase adds a hydroxyl group to tyrosine, which converts it into L-DOPA (short for L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine). Then, another enzyme called aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase removes a carboxyl group L-DOPA and becomes dopamine.

^^^thank God I frequent ADD lol. But completely right. While in rehab I was on a sweets diet pretty much and the staff recommended it to temporarily alleviate cravings. Peanut butter m&M's were my shiiiiit. If you like em, or have never tried em, pick up a small bag and check em out. Alleviated my heroin cravings easily.
