Methadone for pain? Why or why not?

Besides the next generation NSAIDS, and the pain killer made out of some exotic lobster's poison (something like that) what's new in the world of pain meds?

The only 2 things I've read about that are known to be in the works are time release hydrocodone (but that's in FDA trial limbo) the other: more and more tamper proof pills that are getting less and less effective. It's unreal with have so many effective meds but they don't work properly anymore cause the government has to tell us what we can and cannot do :X

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't care if thousands of people overdose on pills. I did, and I have no sympathy for myself. I fucked up, not other people. Responsible patients, and patients like myself, don't deserve to get half-assed treatment just because I - and others - are too stupid to be responsible. If I died, natural selection. I can drink until I kill a kid with a car, and I can still drink until I'm put in jail... if they even do go to jail.

^I agree, I have also overdosed on pills and it was no ones damn fault but my own. Besides, it would have happened whether it was time release abuseproof or not, I would simply just have taken more and it would have happened anyway, lol.

The pain medication development seems to be kind of stale really, it's just more and more cash ins (4-methylpregabalin instead of pregabalin/neurontin, strips instead of pills with subuxone, abuse proof oxycontins and whatnot), can't someone come up with one original idea for once?

There are so many opioids, probably hundreds of relatively well tested ones. Yet the government only seems to have perfected a few, oh, but those are no longer effective. They have to be tamper proof because it's an epidemic! Pills now dominate the drug world like never before. I hear that shit all the time.

Uhhh, this is nothing new, DEA scum are just to stupid to realize and opiate is an opiate and people have been abusing them since they first found them. Hasn't the DEA and big pharma noticed that users are willing to die just to try and extract the active ingredient in a particular med. Fent comes to mind.

Oh, but weed's totally illegal. I think Clinton and Obama probably know that the war on drugs is an epic failure, too bad it's political suicide.

I was on a methadone maintenance program and was getting 75mg a day it wasn't for pain but I can tell you about my experience with methadone. I was never sick between dosing (every 24 hours) so you don't have to dose frequently which is nice and it's really long acting. Once I got to about 40mg-50mg I couldn't get high off anything else, the methadone blocked all other opiates. The only time I could successfully get high (maybe in your cause if you had severe pain and needed to take another opiate for some breakthrough relief) was smoking fentanyl patches. The WD's are horrible, in my opinion the worst WD's you can have and I've had heroin & oxy & sub WD's all separately and methadone was by far the worst. Maybe try fentanyl patches I've only smoked them but they're supposed to last 48-72 hours when used properly so I duno might be worth looking into.

Are you being sarcastic, I can't really tell.

Those are are some of the pro's and con's. With the methadone, it's really a personal choice because I find the pros to be amazing and the cons to be downright awful, I don't know if that makes sense, but there just seems to be a wide range of effects. I did use it most recently for pain control and it did really work well.

Methadone pros: Long lasting duration of effect, very effective at killing pain + NMDA antagonism
Methadone cons: Long lasting duration of effect / slow onset which makes it not so good for breakthrough pain, terrible constipation and weight gain for some people + terrible tolerance which can render other pain meds ineffective

Personally it was the constipation that got me off it.

No sarcastic at all, man..i couldn't express it better...I'm a chronic pain patient too, and i would like to have most freedom to choose how to live my life, i don't like to be in pain..but..

I'll AMEN you to that, I myself am on 75mgs of methadone once daily at the clinic, it seems to hold me over fine until the next day, and I cannot get high or feel the effects of any other opiate, except Fentanyl, it seems Fentanyl is the only opioid that ill breakthrough the methadone blockade dose. even at 30mgs methadone daily I wasn't even getting high on opiates, I remember shooting 7 bags of heroin on 30mgs of methadone and getting just the rush, and a buzz for 15mins....methadone skyrockets your tolerance..im a firm believer the onlything that can help methadone withdrawl, is more methadone itself, fentanyl or really good heroin
