Weight problem

not sure if this goes here as it really doesnt have MUCH to do with drugs, but i guess it kind of does. (if you read that sentence will make more sense).

anyway, I have a problem gaining weight. its to the point that i can eat 4 large meals a day (larger than most people can handle) with snacks in between and specially formulated weight gaining drinks and STILL not gain any weight.

I recently lost ~18 pounds due to being sick and not being able to eat any food for 2 weeks.

that was well over 2 months ago and I have yet to regain more than 4 pounds (and thats usually after eating) back.

Im getting worried and because of past documented drug abuse, my doctor believes that every time i get sick or something happens to me its just me trying to get drugs to abuse. i even called in and asked what i should do and he pretty much said to start eating more. which I do and have been doing for quite some time.

i havent been doing many drugs lately and none of them would effect my weight in a negative sense.


so, my question is, are there any medications out there OTC or prescription that are used to help weight gain?


im afraid im going to get sick again and am going to have to be hospitalized because of this problem.
 
I am confused by your doctor's reaction to your problem. It's not like oxycodone is going to increase your appetite or affect your body chemistry.

It sounds like you may have a problem with your thyroid, which affects your metabolism. Maybe you could let it go a little longer until you really get sick, then sue your piece of shit doctor for negligence. In all seriousness, you should probably get a second opinion or go back to your doctor and emphatically state that you are NOT trying to scam scheduled meds, and that you are seriously worried about your health.

A sudden weight change of 20 lbs is a sign that something is seriously wrong.
 
think i should gain weight?

ohkay, im 16 years of age, and im usualy around 110 lbs... im between 5'8 - 5'10... somewhere in tehre,, probably 5'9. i think i just have a small skeletal structure.. should i be gaining weight? ive been told im underweight... are there disadvantages or health risks involved in being underweight? ... i dont work out or excercise, unless im running around when im on something. i also eat all the time... like 3-4 meals a day. i eat relatively healthy, but ive been eating alot of fast food lately.
 
Being underweight is bad for the bones and can cause osteoporosis.But being underweight can also mean you might have some other health problems, maybe overactive throids. But yes you should try to gain weight.
 
my height right now is about ~5"5' and i weight 120 now (it was down to ~115). my normal and healthy weight is 135.

mind you i have not lost any muscle and i am rather well built (ive lost loads of fat which is bad)

its gotten to the point where my ribs are readily visible through my skin and the skin around my chest has started to droop (ie, its kinda like when some one gets liposuction and has excess skin after).

newskin, thats interesting you mentioned that because my mother has a thyroid problem. I was tested for this when i was younger but they found nothing, is it possible something could have developed?
 
I need to gain weight

Can someone please help me with maybe some ideas how to put on the pounds, i feel that im eating alot but i have a theory that my metabolism is too rapid. What the fuck can i do im 125lbs and im 5'10. HELP ME
 
Your not underweight, someone with that height should be around 114 - 150lbs. A good weight for that height should be 125 to130. So if you put 5 more pounds your all set.
 
Eating more wont necessarily make your body bigger - if anything you'll just put on fat, which is an unhealthy and altogether unattractive way to gain weight.

You don't necessarily have a fast metabolism. I know it sounds intuitively right, but human biology is seldom so simple. The dirty and simple run down is this; your body reflects your physical activity. Change your pattern of physical activity (i.e. start lifting heavy weights) and your body will adapt by getting stronger, which requires getting bigger. Eat a lot without exercising, and your body will adapt by putting on fat. Do a lot of cardio training (fitness not strength) and eat very little, and your body will adapt. You get the picture.

Buy a gym membership. University gyms tend to be cheap and cheerful, I pay $210 for 6 months. If that's not your thing, you can spend a good $80 a month and get extra facilities - a pool, etc. Get a friend or a trainer to show you the ropes, and go easy at first. You'll want to pay attention to your diet too - go for protein powder if it takes your fancy, but I prefer to eat protein rich foods regularly than use powder.

Dieting is just as important as lifting. But one is no good for bulking up without the other. Hope that gives you some guidance :)
 
Im 6 ft and 156 pounds. I used to be like 5'4 and 80 pounds but i started going to the gym and just drank whey shakes all the time, and in 2 years im a lot bigger.
 
I remember about a year ago my mom suddenly started gaining weight, and had a couple other minor symptoms too. It ended up being her thyroid. I'm pretty sure you could gain weight from it as well. I think if it seems like your metabolism has changed significantly in a relatively short period of time, that could be a sign that something is wrong.
 
did what shahab6 said, you are very underweight and should try to pack on some poundage. up your intake to 6 meals a day, they dont have to be huge. eat calorie dense foods more often ie choose a side of a potatoe instead of a salad, eat a banana over a plum, a fajita instead of a chicken salad. cheese is also very good as it has lotsa fat and protein and calcium.

you should get most of your calories and nutrients from food, but if you have to you can add smoothies. use one or two scoops of whey protein with milk or soy and add whatever you want, like peanut butter, oats, banana, yougurt, fruit, etc.

of course lifting weights is also a good option to build up muscle and size. it also prevents osteoporosis (which i have btw, and im 20, it sucks. and im still trying to put size on). health wise, you may have a weakened immune system if your nutrient deficient. if you just have a fast metabolism but are really eating enough then only worry about the osteoporosis and the fact that you prolly wont be considered super attractive. if your diet is lacking, well there can be countless other problems that go along with that.
 
I personally wouldn't worry about it ... I was about the same, topped out at 135 and 6'3 after tons of overeating and weight lifting.

Just eat healthy and exercise, and be happy you're not obese like most people :)
 
I agree with apollo on this. Especially when it comes to weight gain powders and whey protein powders.While these can be benificial supplements,they are just that.Supplements.They should never be used to substitute for real protein rich food. I've worked with dozens of guys that are 'hard-gainers', and in my experience what works best is 4-5 small,high-protein meals throughout the day.(Grilled or baked chicken breast,grilled or baked fish or canned tuna in water,occasionally lean red meat.)and a shitload of CONSISTANT heavy lifting with a limited amount of cardio.
 
my job inculdes physical labor, im a landscaper putting in over 50 hours a week. Do you think i should still hit the gym?
 
shaha, i know i might be seemingly at a normal weight but you have to take into consideration muscle mass.

anyway im just gona go in to get my thyroid checked out. thanks for the advice, i never would have thought of that heh.

oh newskin, there are two main forms of problems that most occur with thyroid (i was talking to my mother about it) one form is when the thyroid ceases to work properly, this is when you can gain weight. there is another problem when the thyroid becomes overactive and this is when metabolism and other factors are screwed with substantially.

Yeah. Oh well, sorry but we dont need three different threads of pretty much the EXACT same topic. Try doing a search or just looking in the forum to see if there are any conversations of the same nature going on already.
