Melatonin

Less is more with melatonin, like alot of things.
I have read a source which stated that many pills made are far too strong and a small dose of 1mg should be plenty..cant remember the source right now..maybe someone else has some more info on this?

I take my concerta twice a day, this does two things; no comedown with rebound symptoms and good sleep because I don't come down.

Concerta supposedly works 12 hours, but it's really only effective for 8-10 in most adults. I take 90 mg's in the morning and 36 mg's nine hours later, this makes it work all day and I'm not rebounding laying in bed so I'm not restless while trying to sleep.

It is important you realise that most sleeping issues with adhd meds are not caused by overstimlation but by understimulation causing rebound symptoms.

So: take concerta 2/day (If you take 54 normally in the morning keep doing that and supplement with a half dose nine hours later). I myself am also taking melatonin in microdosages 8 hours before sleep to enhance my ciracdian rhythm, you can also take 2-3 mg half an hour before sleep.

Make sure to practice good sleep hygiene and use light as an alarm clock.

All this might sound a little drastic but it's really, really worth good the sleep and good focus you'll have ALL DAY.

Also: buy a good book on ADHD and comorbidities, try to find one that's not just focused on medication but also on therapeutic interventions (medication really is necessary though). Having good (not from internet) knowledge myself has helped me tremendously.

A good book should tell you about medications (what and when), light therapy, melatonin (this one is not mentioned by a lot of authors because there's no money to be made).

You can take up to 3mg safely. (anything more than that is not effective) They sell Melotonin in amounts as small as .3mg. Since your on concerta I'd start with 2mg, and if that doesn't work going up to 3mg probably will. I find that melatonin works excellent for some people and is COMPLETELY useless for others.

Sorry if this is the wrong place. To post but it's the most appropriate place I could think of.

I have sleep problems due to the medication I am prescribed for my ADHD (methylphenidate). It is a stimulant, I'm on 54mg a day. I have looked into supplementing with melatonin (3mg). Are there any serious side effects to using it? What is the possibility that I will become dependent on it?

Just a note, I have considered and tried to come off of the MPH but due to the severity of my ADHD I can't. Its bad. I just wanna go to sleep every night...

The side effects of melatonin are paltry and miniscule compared to those of methylphenidate. Also 54 milligrams a day what are you fucking crazy?

atara, what's crazy about 54 mg's?

That is a strong dose...for most people! My father has had severe ADD his whole life, and only 10 years ago (he's 56) started taking Ritain 10 mg Twice Daily (BID)!

I can't take more then thirty mg's in a day and not have insomnia in some form! :\

I would strong consider talking to you doc about getting Instant Release Ritalin and lower your dosage, taking you last dos at least 8 hours before bed. Try to limit light exposure at night, especially once you've laid down...Melatonin is destroyed in the presence of light (in your body).

I love Melatonin, but 1 mg is my max, as any more gives me dreams a little too vivid for my body to stay asleep! 8o

If you're seriously wanting to improve your slepe habits (And you seem to want to!:D)- Trying making these changes and seeing if they make a difference! It sure can't urt;)

Also, do you get enough exercise? I can't sleep well without supps/herbs when I haven't moved enough that day..

Good luck buddy

^i get about an hour or two a day. I'm getting in shape to become a firefighter, so that is a must.

54 is what I'm rx'd.
I've been on it since I was in 4th grade. I'm now in my first year of college. I started at 27mg, then bumped up to 36, then 54. At one point my parents and doctors had me at 72. Pardon my tolerance. It's something that was out of my control for a while.

BTW, I started taking it only on nights when I'm haven trouble falling asleep. It works great.

Well, my daily total is 126 mg's and I have a good wake/sleep cycle for the first time in my life. For me sleeping on Concerta is not a problem, getting to sleep when the meds are wearing out is though. I really advise you to check out some books.

I really don't advise Ritalin, the Half life is way too short. For stable effects throughout a whole day you'd have to take 6-8 doses :/

What is the explanation for how taking micro dosages that long before sleep enhances ones ciracdian rhythm?

I found it really helpful in readjusting
my circadian rhythm during the end bits of benzo withdrawal.

Only had to use it for a coupla months,
found very few noticeable side effects
except at first a touch of morning tiredness
+ stimulated/altered dream states.

What time do you go to bed/wake up normally?
