[MEGA] Meditation

omg how fucking awful
please redirect to nmed or hell

if this aint about opening a discussion about theta wave or anything that could open up to a interesting music discussion please keep it to yourself next time

I would love to discuss theta-waves and cosmology.

Whats wrong with using positive affirmation? Chanting and signing has been considered an act of meditation and/or devotion for a very long time. People have a very narrow perspective about what they believe meditation is.

.

As long as you are fully present with the task at hand and have control over the breath, you are effectively meditating. I don't care what it is. walking, driving a car, freestyling, etc...

i value each function of the body equally as long as it contributes to the subject's nature.

i used breath because it is a common function of the body which most humans have control over. Provides a good starting point for quieting the mind...

tho the way you introduce this tread was uber fail imho

I just wanted to share something I thought was cool. I liked the music and it contained positive affirmations that I believe lend themselves to a philosophical discussion.

It is my belief that in any situation we should work towards healing and positive growth. Even if the OP does not provide a philosophical essay we are presented with a choice to either use the opening as an opportunity to introduce some positive ideas OR we can attack and belittle each other. Sometimes simple is better.

Theta brainwaves is almost more science than philosophy. Its interesting to measure whats going on scientifically during profound experiences, and at some point science and spirituality and cosmology all come together.

Lately I have been interested in the path of warriorship, and a good example of this is the work by Mushashi Myomoto in the Book of 5 Rings.....The way of one thing is the way of all things. Just meditating on what exactly they mean by 'way' is a pretty profound topic. It is something like "true will", a deeper than sub-conscious intent.

I have also been reading about Huna, which is a Hawaiin system of Shamanism that combines eastern and native traditions. Its really interesting how they utilize the subconscious mind. There is so much more going on in our minds than what we are consciously aware of. This leads me to another thought.

'Clearing the mind' is so much more than clearing the subconscious mind....We have so many jobs that take up our energy that we are NOT conscious of. Just imagining clarity with the conscious mind does little to stop these power sinks or free up energy for something more. Clearing the mind must include the subconscious mind. Attaining that is more than just not thinking in words or ceasing internal dialogue (though that is a first step towards 'listening' and 'knowing'). It requires breaking our assumptions about the world and ceasing our habbits, patterns and routines, most of which we are not even aware of....How much energy is frozen just in old habits of how we hold the tension in our body? Sometimes as simple as using the opposite hand to write with a pencil frees up an amount of solidified energy. The majority of our available energy that we currently have access to is solidified in our subconscious habits....and we need that energy if we are to achieve something more.....which is fundamental to Castenedas work.

Whenever I try to meditate and clear the mind, what I end up with is even more thoughts and ideas.

Firstly not listening to that as its impossible to meditate with that beat :P
Just keep at it, you will notice a difference eventually and it will become easier and easier to clear your mind of thoughts. When i started i use to get itching sensations all the time but i kept at it and recognised them as nothing but a distraction to my distilling mind, once i stopped thinking about them they went away.

To start a session firstly inhale then exhale slowly then inhale exhale slowly. After i did that for a little bit i would breathe normally and eventually noticing the breathing went away.

What helped me to get on to the right track when i started out was to start each meditation session with repeating "i am" but not thinkign of anything besides the two words "i am," just keep repeating that to yourself. Jus focusing on getting the words out for as long as you can. That helps you to stop thinking about other things as your concentrating on getting the words out (in your head) but because your not putting any significance on those words your not thinking either, your simply repeating two words holding no meaning to them.

What kinds of meditation practices are people here using?

zazen (concentration practice) mostly

only thing I alter is the eye-lid policy... I can't really keep a clear mind with my eyes half-open, so I close them.

I am actually very experienced in meditation. I used to teach meditation before I had some major setbacks related to health issues.

Clearing the mind of thoughts is rudimentary meditation. Where the deep stuff starts to happen is with the breath....and there is a reason for that. The breath is not only the source of vitality but it is also the biological process which links the conscious and subconscious. The breath can at one moment be completely unconscious and the next be under control of the conscious will....the biological will, the 'true will' or way and the conscious mind all intersect at the breath. The breath is the gateway.

A step beyond the breath is when you can learn to control your heart rate the way you control your breath....perhaps more of a yogic practice than strictly meditation...

At higher levels you can control your hormones and even 'create' elixirs within your own body by refining the body fluids and bringing them to a higher level. This is the 'real' alchemy which is inner transformation that results in biological transformation and not just a new perspective.

Clearing the conscious mind is only the beginning. Its when you become aware of the subtle subconscious and preconscious that we begin to explore the really neat stuff.

The OP is more positive affirmation than "meditation". It may be mislabeled but it still belongs in Philosophy and Spirituality. The affirmations are to promote personal growth. It totally belongs here.

I find progressive house/trance good for meditation....Unfortunately there is a lot of really cheesy trance music out there and a lot of people are jaded towards it, but if you have ever heard any of the really good underground stuff, like the stuff that the LA desert rave scene was into, on psychedelics it will blow your mind.

any relaxing music helps me, than when i zone out the music just seems to dissapear.
fruit flute by shpongle is amazing relaxing
