Hello, I went to go get my meds and was denied my SSRI wich is Lexapro/Escitalopram and instead given a script for fluoxetine. I do not wish to begin a new/different SSRI medication at this moment. What can I do? Please, help me. I come to BL because I know there are many here who really do care. Thank you.

You'll have to give more information, who is prescribing you these medications?
How long have you been taking Lexapro?
Why do you take it?
Do you take other medications?
Were you specifically denied a Lexapro refill after asking?
What was the reason given for switching?

You can experience serious side effects from abruptly discontinuing an SSRI if you've been taking it a long time.

You also don't have to take any medication you don't want to take. (unless you're court-ordered or something)

I just want another opinion. See, I was released from the hospital not long ago and was already starting to feel better with my usual meds and then this. These were prescribed by a doctor wich I disagree with. I have been taking this Lexapro for almost ten years. I do not take other medications at this moment. Doctor said he can't prescribe it with the Risperidone wich he also sent me home with. I take Lexapro for anxiety and depression mostly along with panic attacks. Reason for switching was because supposedly it's not working anymore, but ask my parents how well I am doing now compared to how I was right after I got out of the hospital.Thank you so much for your help, you're great. Also there is no court order (ATM).

Yes? Thank you. I just, did nothing other than usual when I went in there, I felt like I was being over-treated after though. I love all of you. Thank you so much, I have a new-found strength just communicating with ya'll.

We play a large part in our own health.. I would call up the doctor tomorrow and tell them you are not comfortable with this and would like to remain on your current regiment. If they do not agree then politely ask them why.. if their answer is not satisfactory with you then I would find a better doctor to continue your treatment. Don't let doctors push you around after all it your health and your body. Also since medicine is such a big business these days so many of them are posted online and you can give them reviews.. so please give them an honest review, good when applicable poor when you feel they deserve it.. this is also a great way to find quality doctors.

Thank you neversick. Thank you so much. This is a great community. Ya'll so kind :) I understand this may have been asked already, feel free to delete. Thank you so much.

i agree with neversick. be proactive about your health and what you want. if something works for you then be sure to make it clear that it does. if this doctor won't listen to you, time to move on. some doctors are great people, but not great at being doctors, which is quite sad.

^yep, doctors should always LISTEN to their patients and do what's best for them.

I have never taken any SSRI's so I don't have any experiences on them. When I had some issues with panic attacks and anxiety, I dealt with them by exercising/working out a lot, meditation and acupuncture. If this is something you are interested to look into, you can visit our Healthy Living forum and read the threads there. Let me know if you are interested and I will be happy to direct you and send you the links.

What you could do until you get the Lexapro is go ahead and use the fluoxetine because you can get discontinuation syndrome from abruptly stopping Lexapro. Fluoxetine is a different SSRI so I think that would be better than none at all. Are you also taking the risperidone?
