I'll keep it short and sweet. Talking in the third person can be a useful way of conveying an idea, and can add a lot to a post when used with discretion. But the recent trend of taking over a thread and acting out little stage plays for the benifit of the clique is starting to give me the shits. Some threads it can be tolerated in (Singles and Couples for example) because they are cliquey threads to begin with. But we've got to try and avoid turning every thread into a conversation. It's looking messy, and frankly the only real difference between our forum and Main Social at the moment is that I've met most of the people down here.

*headbutts Pleo and steals his wallet*
Sorry I had to do it

this is what happens when you spend too much time in IRC...

*agrees with Pleonastic*
Ok wisearsery aside, the man is right. Lets keep this place for social discussion, not social wankery. We have an IRC channel explicity for this kind of stuff. Banannas and gheyboys... I mean that shit gets old after like, 200 times.

^^ it does?
why didnt anyone tell me?
I'm always the last to find out...
hmpf!

Oh, and just to clarify so I'm not misunderstood, it's these sorts of conversations that I'm talking about:
*person x runs up and gives person y a hug*
*person y gives person x a wedgie*
*person z laughs at person x and lights up a smoke*
*person x pulls undies out of bum*
*person y ducks and hides*
*person x chases person y*
Blah
Blah

*asks for clarification on what exactly pleo means*
*looks up english textbook*
oh, you mean not like the stuff i just typed?
*goes to talk crap on IRC*
^^^
See, this sort of thing is ANNOYING, these are examples of what NOT to do. I SHOULD know better, but i think i'm addicted

OMG! I seriously just had the thought "man fifi, you've been talking in the third person heaps in BL recently... maybe you cut back abit?”... coz it's started to drift into other bits of my life where it just doesn't fit.. (have had some worried looks...
wink.gif
) AND then I clicked on social.. and what's sitting at the top of the pile??? Well fancy that I said.
So I’ll give my friend fifi a rest from doing all the talking Pleo.. she's a bit tired from raping all those threads in the last few days, and need a break anywayz...
*looks around... strips off & does nudie run through Pleo's thread laughing hysterically

I wonder how many people will read this thread and resist the temptation to post a smartass reply in the third person...
Doesn't look like many so far...
You guys and gals are doing a great job of turning me into a hardass mod mofo lately...
Its nothing personal, but it's really aggravating...

but if we didn't make smartarse replies, what else would we say? nothing! then there'd be no replies, and the thread would just shoot out to the second page, and nobody would get a chance to read it. so by being smartarses, in this case we're actually doing a *good* thing because it's actually spreading the good word? perhaps? maybe?
and it really was asking for it, wasn't it?
[edit] and sorry to be further smartarse, but Thoth said:
Banannas and gheyboys... I mean that shit gets old after like, 200 times.
Fair enough, but come on, Tars is as guilty of the banana call as anybody (sorry to pick on you Tars but you are already in this thread)... i hate to be a picky bastard, but where do you draw the line? the banana thing is just one example, but everyone who's been here for a while has their own "in" jokes, some people are just bigger post-whores than others. i think that the Aus social forum is generally pretty well moderated, and nothing like Big social in terms of garbage threads. IMFHO opinion the social forum hasn't changed much at all in the 11-odd months i've been lurking here. and let's face it, we all love to spam a greenlighter who hasn't read the posting guidelines.

Sowwy Tars.. blame it on exam period maybe?? I know I'm frustrated to be locked up, bored shitless with micro-fuckin-organisms... and have that nagging knowledge that bluelight is only the click of a button away...
ps// no 3rd person.. eh..eh..??

Yes I know I've been doing it too, but some of you here who have made smartass comments have really surprised me.
Sorry but it seems like barely anyone can take anything seriously here anymore. Whatever happened to trying to keep this forum above Main Social standards??? The truth is that over the past few weeks or even months the standard here has dropped dramatically. People why do you think so many people don't post on BL anymore???
Keep the 3rd person for IRC, not for our social, and pull your heads in!!

I am very guilty of this... I promise from now on I will try to cut down a bit.
Also my use of triplicate punctuation is atrocious...
I will now be in some form of rehab/self help program.

Please try not to confuse what I'm saying with in-jokes and smartarse comments. I'm all for the odd in-joke here and there, and I'm quite often one of the ones to put one in...
What I have a problem with is the current trend where after an in-joke is put in there are sometimes upwards of a full page of posts which are off-topic, and generally add nothing of any value to the thread. If someone makes a banana joke, don't instantly reply with a third person comment like "throws a banana back at person x", or "eats a banana and throws peel in the bin", or something else equally as inane. Stop and think about what you are about to post, don't post and think later. When you click the reply button, decide whether you are adding to the joke, or hammering it into the ground so hard that it's just not funny anymore.
I know it's hard to make an exact rule about what's too far, and what's considered an in-joke compared to a bullshit post. And we all slip up sometimes, as I'm no doubt sure we all will again in the future (myself included).
But at least think before pressing "Submit Reply", or we'll be back without a search button and have nazi mods which I'm sure nobody wants.

OK.
I'll try to cut down on the
*third person*
Thing.
But guys, there will ALWAYS be things in here that piss you off right? You're not going to be happy with what EVERYONE says or does. So it's kewl to express that you dun like it, Just don't expect THEM to stop somthing THEY dont like just because YOU don't like it!
And yes we all get a bit silly I guess, But where would we all be without a laff hey?

If I melt dry ICE, do you think I can swim without getting wet?

I can't believe you guys have a heated debate over *this*.
Plain stupid.
and acting out little stage plays for the benifit of the clique is starting to give me the shits
WHAT?? It is a form of self-expression! to try an make words into actions! not for the benifit of whatever clinque (not me anyway)

bow down before the one you serve; you're going to get what you deserve...Halo 2:1

the flight of the sparrow
a small sparrow, fresh in the early morning light arbituently and gracefull perches upon a window-sill;
in front, a boy, on a computer.
a blonde boy.
through its mere black eyes, the sparrow sees this blonde read a screen...
he headbutts the desk...
and proclaims...
'is this better pleo!?!?'
with a slight flap,
the sparrow away.

Pleo, I totally agree wif everythin ur sayin, and have been thinkin it for a while now.....so, well said
smile.gif

Yeah it may be fun to muck around and fill up threads with conversations and in-jokes and inanity........but, how much fun is it gonna be when this new server gets overloaded just like the old one did and we have to wait days for threads to start working again?? And, as we all know, right now we only have funding til the end of the year...so we may not even get to keep this server going - let alone be able to afford a new one when this one dies like the old one, due to it bein choked up wif soooo much unnecessary stuff
frown.gif

Okay, so now I'm gonna get flamed, and told to lighten up and get my head outta my ass and stuff like that (figured I'd type it myself to save u the trouble bunny...hehehe)....but, well, at least some of us haven't forgotten how crappy and frustrating it got with the old server towards the end...and somebody has to keep everybody reminded of that!!! Do we want it to happen again?? I think not......sooooo, pleeeeeeeeeeeeease try to think before u hit that submit button - what may give u a moment of fun right now, may contribute to us losin this site that we love in the future
