i noticed every time after i come down on mdma, ate food and took 50mg or 100mg 5htp then i try to sleep i'd get insane brain zaps. it's really scary sometimes because i am afraid to go sleep. usually i manage to get sleep but the brain zaps occur after the day at random times. :(

You get used to it, and it goes away with most normal people. I think someone said around here that it's related to the serotonin imbalance, which I do believe to be the case, because a lot of people get the exact same thing after discontinuing various antidepressants (Effexor XR seems to be the worst culprit.) I don't think anyone knows exactly what causes them, but they are pretty much harmless.

I don't think there's anything you can really do about it, other than time and rest. I get them just as a normal part of life, and I know mine usually come after certain triggers... it's weird.

after i roll wen i pass out on my back i will out of nowhere bcome consious & can see a lil bit but have horrible tunnel vision and wont b able 2 take a breath or move more than just wiggle my hand for a few seconds. this does not happen wen sleeping on my side. is this wut u r talking about or am i experiencing sumthing unique. it scares me pretty bad wen i cant breath, its like my body is failing to restart properly. it doesnt happen my first sleep after rolling but the second sleep. cuz i usally pass out wen im still coming down.

i was getting something like that after i took too may pills in one months time..i started getting i guess u can call it a brain zap...felt pretty wierd... but i wasnt taking any 5htp
as a matter of fact after i was getting the "zaps" i started taking 5htp then in a few days they went away

i think i know what ur talking about. one time i used mdma and ecstasy pills twice in a month. it was quite a bit of mdma each time and i was getting these weird head rush, tingling, and light headedness for about a week after.

Its time to take a break if you are getting zaps through your brain.

I only got them mid way through my honeymoon period...don't get them anymore...it reminded me of a camera flash going off...but in my mind..

imagine you are having a thought and bolt of electricity went through your brain :(

that's a great description. back in the early 2000's i used to roll every weekend, many pills per week and never got them. of course i space them out now that i've gotten older and wiser but in the course of having taken pills for close to 10 years i have gotten these brain zaps only a few times. it's weird and it seems very "hit and miss", ie: i can't seem to find any pattern to it.

every time it's happened, it was when i was trying to go to sleep and it hit me almost like when you're in class, about to sleep, then your body jumps and every looks at you. for me it was a lot like that except instead of my body jumping it was like a lightening bolt shooting through my brain, just like trancetasy said. for me anyway it seems to happen when my brain is right about to cross over into a different state of consciousness. it's startling but doesn't hurt or anything, glad to hear it's harmless. i've always been curious about what those were.

Brain zapps are one of thee scariest things. first time it happend to me i freaked out i couldn't move for what seemed like an hour.....happened to me a lot when i used to abuse X

Yeah, I don't think 5htp is the culprit. It's the mdma. I've gotten these brain zaps occasionally. And I would go out on a limb that 5htp might help cure them.

I get crazy VIVID dreams after my post roll 5-Htp regimen...I seem to remember having weird dreamlike flashbacks in my head the day after a Hard roll. It was odd...I know the 5-Htp contributed to my dreams, but I wonder if It had anything to do with the shocks...

Its like the flash from a camera going off in my head....only I can see the thought that flashed..

some good information

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnic_jerk
hypnic or hypnagogic jerk is an involuntary myoclonic twitch which occurs during hypnagogia, just as the subject is beginning to fall asleep. Physically, hypnic jerks resemble the "jump" made when a person is startled.[1]

Often accompanied by a falling sensation,[2] it is commonly caused by irregular sleep schedules.[3]

SSRI discontinuation syndrome, also known as SSRI withdrawal syndrome or SSRI cessation syndrome, is a withdrawal syndrome that can occur during or following the interruption, lowering of dose or discontinuation of regular SSRI or SNRI antidepressant drug usage. The condition often begins between 24 hours to one week after reduction in dosage or complete discontinuation, depending on the elimination half-life of the drug. The prescribing labels of SSRIs acknowledge the possibility of "intolerable" discontinuation reactions, and some patients have extreme difficulty discontinuing use from SSRI drugs.

Symptoms described as "brain zaps", "brain shocks," "brain shivers" or "head shocks" are a withdrawal symptom experienced during discontinuation (or reduction of dose) of antidepressant drugs.[6][7] The symptoms are widely variable in description and of unknown etiology;[7] common descriptions include dizziness, electric shock-like sensations, sweating, nausea, insomnia, tremor, confusion, and vertigo.[6][7] The MedDRA "preferred term" for coding these types of symptoms in adverse drug reaction reports (for use in pharmacovigilance databases such as under the Yellow Card Scheme), is paraesthesia.[8][9]

In a 1997 survey, a "sizable minority" of medical professionals were not confidently aware of the existence of antidepressant withdrawal symptoms.[10] A 2005 review of adverse event reporting showed that descriptions of "electric shocks" from patients on paroxetine had been reported more frequently than some other symptoms.[8]

SSRI Withdrawal Syndrome

The cause of withdrawal syndrome following discontinuation of SSRIs is unknown, but the electric shock sensations reported with neck flexion are identical to Lhermitte's sign, which appears with dysfunction of the posterior spinal cord. This suggests change at a neuronal level.14 It has been proposed that inhibition of reuptake initially increases the synaptic concentration of serotonin. Exposure to high concentrations of 5-HT, even for as short as five weeks, may cause down-regulation of receptors. When the SSRI is discontinued the concentration of 5-HT falls. The lower level of 5-HT is insufficient to provide an adequate agonist stimulus for the down-regulated receptors, resulting in withdrawal syndrome.6 Inhibition of 5-HT and norepinephrine receptors may be involved in withdrawal symptoms from venlafaxine.

Paroxetine possesses muscarinic antichoninergic activity and may cause withdrawal symptoms via the same mechanism as the TCAs.18 Compared to other SSRIs, paroxetine is the most pharmacologically selective antagonist at the 5-HT reuptake site.19 The withdrawal syndrome usually subsides within several weeks of discontinuation in most reports. We found no data describing patients at highest risk for the phenomenon.

so it's basically the same thing whether it is due to SSRI's or other serotonin agonists such as MDMA... it has to do with down-regulation of 5-ht receptors?

I always take 5-htp the next day, although I know a few people who take it before they sleep and it seems to work fine and even helps them sleep. I have something against the idea, i dunno, not really sure why. Taking 5-htp before E definitely doesn't help at all, I kinda prefer to use it the days afterwards just to take the edge off the comedown and speed up recovery.

Brain zaps could be due to the E or many other factors though. Does it only happen when you take 5-htp? Still happen when the MDMA is out of your system?

day one - feeling like dying, 5htp/multivitamins/advil did not stop the brain zaps.

day two - still feeling like crap and get minor brain zaps
i finally know why, i didn't smoke weed at all. i'm used to be so stoned to sleep, i end up spent the last two nights half awake from 10pm to 5am and got some sleep afterwards. the awake moments i felt drowsy and sleepy, i must keep myself awake and get proper sleep schedule back :|

coming down from an mdma binge 2-5 days of zapping
coming down from paroxetine took 2 month of zapping
