Record drug seizure in Sydney
May 15 2003
A record haul of the illicit drug ice was shipped from China to Australia hidden in cartons of rice noodles, authorities said today.
A joint operation by Australian Customs Service and Australian Federal Police led to the seizure on Tuesday of 223 kilograms of the methamphetamine drug commonly known as ice.
The AFP said two people would face court today in relation to the seizure, which has an estimated street value of $112 million.
"The drugs had been cleverly concealed in a container shipment of cartons of Rice Sticks which had landed at Port Botany from China on May 2," said Customs NSW Regional Director David Collins.
Mr Collins said customs intelligence analysts had selected the shipment for scrutiny and made the discovery.
The AFP then placed the container under surveillance and on Tuesday this week monitored its delivery to a warehouse in Sydney's Ultimo.
AFP Eastern Operations General Manager Tony Negus said police alleged a number of the cartons containing the ice were separated from the rest of the contents and further surveillance led to the arrest of a man and a woman yesterday.
After the arrests, AFP officers carried out a number of searches in Sydney's inner suburbs, discovering a further five kilograms of ice.
A 46-year-old Australian woman from Ultimo had been charged under the Customs Act with possessing a trafficable quantity of narcotic goods and importing a prohibited import.
She had also been charged with possessing a trafficable quantity of narcotics, under the Drugs Misuse and Trafficking Act.
A 40-year-old man, a Canadian citizen living in Sydney, was charged under the Customs Act with possessing and attempting to possess a prohibited import.
Both were due to appear in Sydney's Central Local Court today.
Australia's previous largest ice seizure was in July 2001 when a joint AFP Police and Customs operation led to the seizure of 152 kilograms of the drug on a yacht moored at Mooloolaba on Queensland's Sunshine Coast and from a townhouse on the Gold Coast.
