You and Jesse have said a few times that 'non-American's shouldn't comment on the issue' and I really don't agree. It just seems like a means to kill the debate. I mean, we are not actively doing anything about the issue here, we're talking about it on a fucken drug website. In terms of quality discussion, I don't see the harm in varied opinions.
It's not so much that I have an inherent problem with non-Americans expressing opinions about American social and political issues. The problem I have isn't simply that you're not American so you don't get to have an opinion.
You're right, that's a bullshit way to shut down debate. That's not my issue here. My issue is people who make comments and give opinions when they clearly don't understand the situation and the complex social contexts. Or don't understand how the laws work.
Or, express their opinion in a way that creates a competitive atmosphere to it, like where someone outright says "why cant Americans see the obvious" thus massively over generalizing and outright ignoring the possibility that they can see the argument and honestly disagree.
And obviously all these things are much more likely to come from foreigners than anyone else.
If someones a foreigner but has lived in America for a long time, id have no problem with them giving their opinion. Because they understand what they're talking about. They're giving their opinion from a position of understanding the subtle social environment.
For example, you have people who think all Americans are gun nuts, you have people who think you can easily just go buy an automatic weapon no questions asked. You have people with no grasp of the internal political gun debate. These are all examples of ignorance that makes debate frustrating and largely pointless. And personally I get quite frustrated by people who insist on both having and giving an opinion when they haven't bothered learning the details and the background. You don't HAVE to have an opinion on everything. And if you can't be fucked to learn about the subject, don't then give an opinion on it.
And again, it's also very frustrating to hear people who in other contexts get outraged by what they see as Americans bossing other countries around, basically saying what Americans should do.
Take people who say "Americans need to give up their guns". Imagine if an American told that person that their country needs to do something, they'd fucking lose their minds. It's totally hypocritical.
That's my problem here. It's not that ALL foreigners can't have an opinion, it's that most of the time I don't think they have sufficient knowledge and standing to rightfully express their opinion. If the individual lives in America and has for years, that's totally different, far as I'm concerned that have as much right to give their opinion as anyone else. So it's not as simple as just being a foreigner.
