There's a lot of backlog here..this is stuff from before my time (as a mod here in CE&P). I happened on this discussion because of what happened with Trump yesterday, and wondered what might be said in this thread on Gun Control. That's when I noticed some discourse that seemed in poor taste. All I'm doing is trying to note that I don't want to see that kind of stuff here, moving forward - if that wasn't clear, I apologize.

If there is anything in this thread that I should be deleting, I'm happy to do so, feel free to flag stuff and I'll clear it out. I want to be helpful here. I would also just like to move away from name calling and otherwise being reactive to one another, that's all.

I'm of the opinion that mass shootings are the extroverted inverse of suicide. Instead of taking one's own life due to suffering, going out in a blaze of glory appeals to some. This is incredibly nuanced and difficult to pin down, but I would be interested in some type of retrospective analysis of personality traits and contextual factors linked to suicides and mass shooters... be interesting to see what kinds of overlaps and divergences there are.

When we look at the last 20 years in the US, there has been a surge in overdose deaths, gun violence, suicides, and political violence. There is a a deeper existential suffering that people seem to be struggling with... i think the loss of a connection to in-person community and the ways in which faith-spaces have eroded or fanaticized play a major part in this. Drugs and politics cover up the pain for only so long.
 
Peer pressure and social confusion.
Too many sides pushing into and pulling from too many directions.
People get overwhelmed and need to decompress.

Not a mass shooting, but a mass murder suicide came to my mind: the pilot who locked himself into the cockpit and flew a plane full of passengers into the Alps.
Depressed, with relationship issues, health issues that threatened his career...

The Madison Police Department confirmed that three people have been killed, including the suspected shooter, and six people injured.

Police Chief Shon Barnes was speaking to reporters earlier today when it appeared the death toll had risen to five in the middle of the press conference, but police now say that was incorrect

Authorities identified the shooter as Natalie Rupnow, who went by the name Samantha. Rupnow was pronounced dead in transport to a hospital, while one teacher and one teenager were declared dead at the scene
