Mass Shooting and Gun Control Megathread

Wonder how many of those 39 "mass shootings" are something like a gang member shooting 3 other gang members with an illegal Glock pistol. We used to not count that stuff as a mass shooting but we do now

Not sure, but I know a few days back, I got two notifications on my annoying news app in the same day about 2 different mass shootings that day. Real ones, not gang-related. Seems like almost every day I'm getting one, the vast majority weren't even mentioned here. But I couldn't say whether any of them are crime-related. But I don't think it really matters. Let's say there were 10 like, "real" mass shootings. its less than a month into the new year. used to be, 30 years ago, that one mass shooting was an unthinkable occurrence. Remember when Columbine happened? Now it's gotten so bad that we're like pssh, some of those 39 mass shootings this month were probably just gang violence. How bad will it be in 10 years? We need to figure this shit out. But it seems like everybody is getting angrier and crazier, so I'm not sure that we will anytime soon.

have you talked to her about arming teachers? what is her view?
I haven’t; if I had to guess she’s on the opposite end of the spectrum from me politically. In my immediate, nuclear family, I’m the only one who owns a firearm or believes in the 2nd Amendment. My father makes me unload my handgun when I stay in his house, which I abide by because it is his house.

But yeah that was horrifying when my sister told me that story about her student. I wish I could get the kid sent away, but the schools are pretty damned permissive of bad behavior these days. And my family is about a 30 minute drive from one of the worst school shootings in our state during the 2010s. There’s a lot of parents around here who don’t secure their firearms, and most everyone has one. I don’t like e thought of mandatory storage laws but if they were to be passed, I think they should specifically apply to parents.

If you have a kid and you don’t lock up your weapons, you shouldn’t be a parent.

arming teachers is dumb. letting teacher arm themselves isn't.
America has a lot of vets, who would benefit from a job keeping kids safe.
If every school had a former combat arms veteran with a weapon waiting in a closet for something terrible to happen, school shootings would rapidly decline as shooters got killed.
cowards (school shooters) go after easy targets.

i'd be interested to hear your sister's thoughts.
I asked her. She feels it would be too risky, that it would increase the likelihood of a teacher shooting a student. Too much risk of students getting ahold of it somehow. The usual logical reasons.

Which is fair enough. I would probably kick the teeth in on that kid who is threatening her. Yesterday she told me he said, "I want to know what it feels like to kill a person." I wana know what it feels like to pull the switch on a fucking psychopathic teenager, bud. Can't have everything in life.

God it makes me livid. The administrator told her he, "Has emotional trauma," as the excuse for not pulling him out of the school... yet if a kid gets caught with a vape there, they immediately send them off to an alternative school.

IN WHAT WORLD ARE VAPES MORE DANGEROUS THAN PSYCHOPATHS?!

That's insane. That kid is exactly the kind of kid who's gonna end up shooting up a school... or at least gonna end up in jail for murder as an adult. If not mass murder.

this is what happens when commies take over teachers education, and turn into the classrooms into asylums with traumatized kids in genpop to traumatize everyone and make everyone mentally ill.

Holy shit, this video is on point and I don't see any arguments that can hold water against what Jon Stewart says in this interview. Reminds me that too many people attempt to bend the facts to fit their opinion while others alter their opinion based on facts. Less than 10 minutes long.

Jesus I want to bash that interviewer's head in with a brick.

it's not that i agree with the other guy, he's just so fucking disruptive

^Yeah Jon Stewart is the worst, argues in bad faith, talks over people. He hardly makes a convincing defense for his argument. I watched the whole video and he made me feel annoyed the whole time.

Jon Stewart did own the fuck out of that guy….also about firearms being the leading cause of deaths for children kind of depends on the definition of a child, when I hear that I think 10 year olds n what not but I’m guessing the statistic includes gang banging 17 year olds too :/, nuance is a fun game

I really don't like how he keeps interrupting. Sorry, but if your argument is valid, you don't need to be disruptive and overpower your opponent by getting louder. Just horrible and disrespectful

No matter how much I disagree with someone, it is common courtesy to let them finish a train of thought, and react to that, instead of undermining every single little point on the way until my opponent is so tired out, they a) forgot the point they were going to make or b) are already so frustrated with me that they don't want to finish it.

I honestly don't know if more or less guns are the solution for the USA. I don't know if either of these 2 are correct, and to be fair, neither do they. Criminals will still have guns, even if you ban them. Government will still have guns, even if you ban them. School shootings? Kids run amok with knives, axes, poison, the guns are not the issue, just easily available.

And on the other hand, would you rob a gas station, if you knew that even the granny behind you is carrying a firearm? Would a kid shoot up its school if they knew the teacher was armed? Maybe it would at least be an inhibitor to crime, it's hard to say?
Would you rob a gas station, if you knew not even the cashier was allowed to carry a gun?

she could be carrying a gun today but gas stations are still robbed.

are you suggesting a mandate?

where is it not possible that a gas station cashier could be carrying a gun?

My suggestion as always is to read all the words, not just half and then imagining the other half.

No i'm not suggesting anything, I am contemplating whether even one of those two buffoons shouting and throwing excrement at each other is remotely correct. As I stated in my previous post: I don't know if either one is correct, and in fact nobody knows that, since neither suggestion has yet been made reality.

If guns were banned, Sherlock. If guns were banned. It would at least strip criminals of inhibitions toward robbing a place, if they know they aren't allowed to have guns. So banning them, after decades of celebrating gun culture in the US I find the most idiotic thing that could happen, organized crime would take a huge advantage.

And neither do I find the option of giving everyone guns perfect, yet it might work as an inhibitor if you KNOW the cashier has a gun, the guy just entering the store has a gun, even the granny behind you has a gun, yes you might think twice or thrice about robbing that store. But there are also a lot of whacked out people in the US, high on meth or whatever - they're not going to listen to logical thoughts.

Anyways it's a shit situation no matter what, rly just wanted to convey that the host is being a dick

Yeah. As far as not allowing us to own guns if they took our guns away the only guns that would be turned in are the “good guys” turning their guns in and then the criminal population would be emboldened.

My heart goes out to the victims of mass shootings, but stripping is of gun ownership is not what I want to see done. I do believe that part of the problem is how we glorify killing and he’ll even drugs on TV and in music that kids listen to. But is the answer censorship I don’t think so either. I’m not a proponent of censorship but something should be done.

I am x-military and own an AR-15 and am wanting to get a sig sauer spear. But I’m not out there murdering people either. My weapons stay locked up unless I’m going to the range.

I think having increased police presence at schools and I don’t mean some 300 lb fat sherif deputy either would be helpful. Though probably not economical or realistic especially after the whole defund the police bs going around.

There is no easy answer.

no need for the snark. i’m just trying to fully understand your post.

communication is a two-way street and maybe, just maybe, you didn’t communicate your message as clearly as you thought…
