Yeah, see this is the problem in a nutshell. You American's think this issue is special to you and your gun situation. People continually and correctly point out that the real cause of the issue has nothing to do with guns what so ever (guns are inanimate objects). The UK clearly demonstrates why this is the case, given we have no legal gun culture on a massive scale and yet still have murders and other life altering violence, including gun crime! We have guns, stabbings, acid attacks and the occasional Islamic terrorist attack.. all the colours of the slainbow. True diversity.
The issue is psychological. You can't accept the fact that it is possible to live peacefully with mass gun ownership, that guns aren't the issue, because to do so immediately reveals the issue is you (American's). Of course the truth is nuanced and you have to break it down further than just 'American's'; drug use (legal and illegal), poorly administration of gun ownership criteria, poor training and recruitment administration in the police, etc.
Conversely we Brit's can't accept the fact that banning firearms hasn't worked, because to do so immediately reveals that 'multi-culturalism' has failed.. the overwhelming majority of violent crime with weapons is committed by feral black youth, Islamic nutjobs, and 'travellers'.
Framing the entire argument around gun ownership is such a trite oversimplification. It appeals only to emotion, which as we know is the key methodology of the politician and those with agendas, those who don't want to sit down and hash out a discussion and possible solutions.
