People who smoke marijuana have a different manner of walking, a study by Australian scientists has claimed.

The research from the University of South Australia, published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence, found those who smoke cannabis tend to move their shoulders less and elbows more as they walk.

The pilot study also found marijuana users swing their knees more quickly during walking.

The scientists compared 22 cannabis users to 22 non-drug users in Australia. Those who used the drug had consumed it on more than five occasions and had no history of illicit stimulant or opioid use.

The differences in gait were small and found in people who smoked a light or moderate amount of cannabis.

Some changes were so small it was impossible for a specialist to detect.

"The results suggest that history of cannabis use is associated with long-lasting changes in open-chain elements of walking gait, but the magnitude of change is not clinically detectable," the study says.

llicit drugs work by changing the levels of neurotransmitters in the ‘pleasure centres’ of the brain, which are important in movement.

The authors said further research was needed to see if the subtle changes in walking observed in the study became more apparent with ageing and increased cannabis use.
