MAOI alkaloids in San Pedro

I had heard that San Pedro has an active alkaloid that acts as an MAOI. The only information I could find was a wiki page on one of the alkaloids.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3,4-Dimethoxyphenethylamine

Anyways I take 75 mg of effexor daily. If you don't know that is an SNRI. My question is really, will I put myself at risk for serotonin syndrome if I consume the cactus with all the other alkaloids? Or will I probably be okay?

People claim to have taken MDMA with San pedro no problem... so is it safe to assume it would be okay with SNRI's also? I mean if the MAOI was really active that would be a trip to the hospital if you took MDMA.

Well yes it will contain comnpounds that inhibit MAO, but only by virtue of being an alternate substrate. Any drug metabolized by MAO is de facto a competetive inhibitor.

I gather what you're asking though is does it contain any inhibitors of the strength of harmala alkaloids or meclobemide? Well not to my knowledge

Thanks for the response. I appreciate it.

So if people can take mdma after eating san pedro and have no problems, I will probably be okay taking hopefully at least a 500mg dose of mescaline while taking an SNRI?

As far as I'm aware, Mescaline is a heavily serotonergic drug so you're still putting yourself at risk for Serotonin syndrome whether there's significant MAO inhibition or not.

Hm... I've never heard of serotonin syndrome being caused by the combination of a serotonergic psychedelic and an ssri.

I found an article from wikipedia that doesn't exist anymore, claiming prozac and lsd has caused it, but like it said, it's gone.
