The beach, the abandoned lighthouse and the magpie barbers

It has been a while since I posted on here but this story needs telling. It’s probably going to be a long one so bare with me… I’ll get to the abandoned lighthouse soon enough!
I have done LSD on and off over the last 10 years and am an experienced tripper.
Last week it was my bucks weekend (getting married in 3 weeks) and my awesome friends took me to the NSW south coast for an amazing weekend of pleasures at a gorgeous luxury beach-front house.

The highlight of the weekend was taking LSD with my friends...

We had already been at the coast for 2 days partying and drinking and normal bucks party shenanigans when we decided to take some trips. We had an early night the night before as I had suggested that the optimal time would be to wake up at 4am to ensure we would be tripping for the 6am sunrise. The house was amazing, you could literally sit on the couch in the lounge room or in the loft bedroom and watch the ocean over the glorious golden beach.

So there we were, a little hung-over stumbling around at 4 in the morning getting together for what was to be one of the greatest days ever. There were 5 of us tripping and 2 others that chose not to partake. Me and my friend J took 4 hits each (2 tabs + 2 sugar cubes) and the other boys M, P and C took 2 each as they are not as experienced as us. After taking them we were still quite tired and everyone went back to sleep and set alarms for 5:30 or so. I laid in Bed but couldn’t sleep, however my friend J did manage to sleep. At about 5:00 to 5:30 I started to notice the familiar effects come on quite strongly. The trips we had were quite old so we were not sure how potent they would be. They were just fine!

The sheets of my bed started sliding around like liquid silk, the colours and shadows on the wall started pulsating with energy. That was it. I had to get up. The others were still in bed and it was still dark so I made myself a coffee and had a cigarette while looking out over the beach. The grass on the back porch started twisting and turning in a fractal ballet. This was getting pretty full-on!

Finally J awoke looked and me and gave me the look of a man who had just woken up to discover he was tripping balls! We both declared that everything was indeed moving and J decided his skin wasn’t “fitting” properly so he laid on the ground and wiggled around on the grass. It looked good so I did the same. Yep, we were wriggling on the ground trying to get our skin to fit better and the others were not even up yet!

Eventually M and C staggered out. M had vomited which was not the greatest way to start a trip but he soon came good and we all sat on the back deck watching the sunrise. It was an overcast day and by most beach sunrise standards pretty average, but watching day break on LSD no matter the weather is still an amazing experience. The birds calling, the sound of the ocean and the clouds making infinite fractal patterns in the sky. Me and J went in to get P as he was still in bed and the day was afoot! In the shared bunkhouse bedroom where he was we found a bug on its back on the floor, a REALLY big bug! It was a beetle probably about 10cm long and 5cm wide, It’s spiny legs looked like something out of a horror movie. We ran back to C and declared “THERE IS A MONSTER!!!” C came to see what all the fuss was about and indeed agreed with us that it was in fact a genuine monster. We got a bottle and allowed the monster to climb on board so we could relocate him to a more suitable location on the balcony. P seemed to be having a deep introspective moment so we left him be for a while.

We went back out the back and decided we should walk to the beach. It was only a short 2 minute walk over a dune to the beach but the others decided in the current state they did not want to walk. Me and J decided we would go alone. C declared “Could you bring some of the beach back with you?” we agreed and wondered off to the beach. We got to the beach and dipped our toes in the ocean. It felt cool, cleansing and alive. M clearly couldn’t resist the lure of the ocean and came down the dune a minute after us. We stood looking out at the sea with the waves lapping at our feet for quite some time. The sea just goes on forever, you really can just look at it all day. But! We had to bring some back for the C and the others! We looked around for a good bit of seaweed for a while when J spotted a huge piece of wood (1meterx15cmx15cm ?) floating around in the shallows. That was what we needed to take back! We made our way back up the dune but realised we should have still got seaweed too! I quickly ran back looked for a good bit but found a dead bird, after seeing that I decided the nearest bit of seaweed would do and we made our way back to the house!

We arrived back at the house and J dropped the soaked wood in front of C and a slopped the seaweed on top! “There is your ocean!” We proclaimed! C laughed and said “Yesss, I am pleased, this will do!”.

(At this point I need to quickly point out that the day before a few guys had given each other mohawks while drunk, as you do. The point is that there was also a large amount of human hair on the grass in the backyard!)
C looked at us with a concern and advised that while we were away the magpies (birds) had been taking our hair somewhere. He looked at us with fear in his eyes and said “I don’t want to know what they are doing with it!” We could not stop laughing at images of birds’ nests made of my friend’s hair. We decided that magpies are clearly barbers and established another fascinating mythology around this.

We eventually got P up and showed him the ocean we had retrieved as well as informed him about the magpie barber situation. We all sat around for a while looking at the clouds in the sky. You could literally get lost and dizzy in the forgetting where you were. Amazing.

At this point we started talking about an old lighthouse we saw on a website for the area. We realised we had sober people who could drive us there! We absolutely had to go there! The sober people M2 and A had gotten up at this point (I guess it was 7-8am) and we told M2 he had to take us to an abandoned lighthouse. I don’t think he realised we were serious at first and thought it the ramblings of some crazy trippers. We did not let up about the lighthouse for an hour or so until he finally got the point. I yelled at M2 to use his human magic like ipads and cars to get us there! We were on LSD… we just watched the sunrise over a beach and now we were about to be whisked away to an abandoned lighthouse! Holy Shit this was insanity!

After much fuss trying to get shoes on and fumbling around for supplies we got in the car. In the hour previous we had constructed an elaborate mythology about the mysterious abandoned lighthouse. Thoughts of Scooby Doo raced through our heads without relent! It had a lot to live up to. P and C decided again to stay at the house as they were too fragile for real world interactions, but me J and M were damned if we were not going to see a lighthouse today! Sober A also decided to come. Before we left C declared “could you bring me back some lighthouse please?” Five of us piled in M2’s car and off we went down the road. The car was small and stuffy and we are all pretty big guys so the 5-10 minute car ride could not be over soon enough! We exploded out of the vehicle like a clown car and looked at the tourist sign which advised it was now a 30 minute walk on foot to get to the lighthouse. A few seconds of trepidation about such a walk were quickly killed by our need to see a freaking lighthouse! We hadn’t come this far for nothing.

We walked along a beautiful picturesque walking path and down to the foot of the big climb. At the foot was a big pool of slime with rusty metal in it. We decided that clearly ALL of the “mystery” was concentrated right here! We stopped at a bench and watched the sea and the boats for a few minutes and then started the climb. It only took us maybe 10 minute which was much better than we had anticipated. We walked along the path covered by branches, flowers and with birds and lizards everywhere going about their business, when I saw a building. THE LIGHTHOUSE I declared! It was indeed a lighthouse and indeed an abandoned one. Nobody else around at all. The lighthouse was quite run down (apparently will soon be restored) and had graffiti all over it from local kids. It was not as majestic as I had imagined, it didn’t have a big tower like the stereotypical lighthouse. We all did a few laps taking in the essence of the lighthouse. We had made it! I picked up a piece of smashed glass from the ground, I had found some lighthouse to bring back to C!

We walked over to a lookout where you can see a big rock shelf the lighthouse was clearly there to point out originally. We looked over the ocean at the boat activity in the area and we saw a boat that seemed to be blowing a lot of smoke. We also noticed a smaller dingy type boat heading towards it. We (even the sober ones) thought we were witnessing some kind of sea rescue! We watched the smoking boat get closer and the other boat circling it. I declared that I kind of hoped the boat exploded and everyone agreed that would indeed be sweet. After a while we realised we were not witnessing a sea rescue at all and merely boats going about their everyday business! Damn! We made our way back and when we go to the bottom again we saw the smoky boat in the shallows. We were relieved he was ok and thought that seeing him again rounded of our imaginary sea rescue story quite nicely.

We headed back to the house and again the car was tiny and cramped. We got back to the house yelling and screaming at the others the many things we had learned about lighthouses! A looked at C and slowly showed him the glass. A huge smile came on his face “You brought me a lighthouse! Excellent!”

The day was just about over, we were all thoroughly exhausted. We did however have a few whole coconuts that we had bought the day before for some reason. Me and J and M sat on the grass overlooking the ocean cracking open coconuts with a hammer, drinking out the sweet juice. At this moment C announced “Dolphins!!!” We looked up and there was a pod of dolphins surfing at the beach. We cheers’ed our coconut shells together in celebration at all that had happened.

We took LSD, watched the sunrise, went to an abandoned lighthouse, observed magpie barber’s and were now looking at dolphins while drinking fresh coconuts. I don’t think I possibly could have imagined that would ever be a day I experienced in my life, but it was. It couldn’t possibly have been a better day!

That was only one day of a 5 day bucks party. I have amazing friends who made the above and more happen.

If there is a moral to this and a lesson I’ve learned over my many years tripping it is that the best experiences come from planning an adventure. It might not be as lavish as this but even walking to the end of the street can make for a great lsd adventure if you can handle it. Sitting around the house listening to Pink Floyd is great and all, but think about all the lighthouses out there to find!
