Low self-esteem leads to drug use?

I am pretty sure that you all have heard the theory that one of the main reasons kids use drugs is because they have low self-esteem, low self-confidence, poor self-image, etc.
Well, in doing research for my thesis I came across this stunning little study conducted in the UK, and the researchers found that adolescents with HIGHER self-confidence were actually more likely to use drugs. Apparently, the subjects of this study did not use drugs to "escape" or to dull pain or anything like that. They just used drugs for pleasure. Imagine that!
If you want to read the full text of the study (and it is only one page!), check it out at http://web5.infotrac-college.com/wadsworth/session/321/201/14402645/7!xrn_56_0_A72114821

So have I, that's why I was so glad to find this study! Leave it to merry old England to finally show some sense.

I don't know anyone in the medical profession who believes that a primary motivation for drug use is low self-esteem for any large group of drug users.
Most everyone these days realizes that drug use results from a complex set of social and personal factors, and as such, cuts across all social and economic lines.
As a side-note, pleasure-seeking and thrill-seeking are often considered two major factors in drug use and experimentation, the latter often pointed to as a primary explanation for the higher rate of drug use among competitive athletes at all levels (high school, college, and professional).
