'Losing the Magic': DXM

So I've read a lot about people 'losing the magic' with DXM, usually attributed to the '50 trip rule'. Is there an actual reason behind this or is it something caused by overuse/abuse?

Just something on my mind as I just dosed 600mg and have done more than 50 trips on it without any loss.

It's probably less to do with how many trips you have, and more to do with the frequency of tripping. You could probably trip 100 times over a 50-year time span with no problem, but tripping 100 times in 5 months would probably be overkill. (Of course I just made up those numbers.)

In my experience, it's very easy to become excessively involved with dissociatives, because they don't keep themselves in check like classical psychedelics do. They're painless, effortless, and addictive, unlike LSD or psilocin.

I've decided that the best way to retain the magic with dissociatives is to save them for special occasions, and to refrain from getting into a regular habit, like weekly tripping.

i've had over 100 trips over the last 10 years and even right now at 12-13mg/kg have not lost the magic. I notice all this talk of DXM coming up like synchronicity either i'm going crazy or there is something strange happening. Perhaps i'm just too high and have been too high for too long but that doesn't explain anything.

it is indeed easy to get excessively involved with dissociatives and lose all sense of self and meaning. I retain the magic by binging once a year or so on dissociatives and psychs on and off on weekends. That keeps the connection from the crown of my head flowing strong. Every now and then you just need a reminder of what you've learned in the past.

there's no 50 trip rule tho, that's a myth, i've certainly done far more than 50 trips on DXM alone. That magical connection is still here.

Earlier this year I thought I had lost the magic, that DXM was just going to make me feel crappy and nothing more. I was wrong. I've tripped on DXM well over 50 times, though I admit I stopped counting some time ago.

Sometimes it just amounts to taking it differently (such as using pure powder, and/or dosing slowly), and maybe under different circumstances (go for a walk, or do something new).

I think the magic is lost only when you've gained a massive tolerance, and can no longer get high no matter what dose you take.

im at the point where i want to use it socially , not like mixed with alcohol , but daytime trips

Approximately 6 months after I started doing DXM 3 or 4 times a month, I stopped for around 3 weeks and after I got back into it I noticed a distinctive loss of 'something'. The trips had a sudden loss of potency and most of the fuzziness where it is hard to focus on things became a strange clearheaded type feeling.
I was slightly disappointed as I was quite enjoying the effects I was getting before I had the break.

It took a long, long time to return to anything near the quality of effects I was experiencing previously, and I still am pretty far off, over 6 years later. I have regained probably 40 or 50 percent of the 'magic' I thought I lost by realizing it is always there.

The only way I can get decent effects from my usual dose (300mg) is by combining it with something that potentiates it or taking more

A good friend of mine noticed the same thing as me, with some parts of the DXM experience being dulled after having a break from regular use.
I have no clue as to how the mechanism for this works.
I have noticed a slight reversal of this by going without for extended periods of time and then getting back into it intermittently, being careful not to do it habitually again.
