Looking to Philosophy for Answers: Where to Begin?

Being interested in philosophy is great, don't get me wrong. But don't be surprised or frustrated if you go in "looking for answers", and find mostly just more questions.

I agree completely. Philosophy helps teach critical reading and thinking skills. If you are truly interested in philosophy and learning, no amount of answers will satisfy you. Every question leads to another question. You will constantly question the validity of every answer you make for yourself.

Every question leads to a whole series of other questions.

Fixed.

Doing philosophy will teach you how to ask the right questions in a given situation, in order to maximize understanding. It's not the definitiveness of the answers that matters, but rather, the amount (and type) of intrigue and and the quality of discussion the questions generate.

Every answer is really an unasked question. Philosophy is not about getting to the point of things- although there are philosophies that consider that to be right. Philosophy can become a practice which may not necessarily lead one to be free of their problems, but have them interpret their struggle differently, hopefully causing less suffering and greater understanding.

I don't know about 4 + 3 = 1, but I do know about 0 = 2

The material elements, that all which composes the trinity and the value of triangulation, the insight and body of form those factors gathered create, the seven exoteric rays accumulated esoterically to create a single source of force ~ etc

^whaaat ?? really??

awesome!
Sri Anandamayi Ma (1896-1982) was one of the most influential spiritual luminaries of the Twentieth Century. Her devotees ranged from Prime Ministers and great Saints down to the simplest villagers, and people came from all over the world to simply see Her and sit in Her presence. Though virtually uneducated, She spoke with the authority of direct experience and captivated all with Her sweetness and power. To this day, Her presence and guidance is felt by those who turn to Her in prayer, and Her life is an inspiration to all who feel drawn to the spiritual Path.
.....

Although having no external Guru, in 1922 She spontaneously went through the ritual of Initiation exactly according to the Shastras, the Guru emerging from within, and after imparting the instruction and empowerment, being absorbed back into Her own Self. She later gave Her husband diksha, changing his name to Bholanath, and beginning his transformation from a simple, yet virtuous man of the world, into a great sadhak and saint.

Nietzsche is very rewarding. Tho, I wouldn't start with "Thus Spoke Zarathustra". There are some exceptionally well written course books on Nietzsche, Cambridge is probably one of the best in this aspect.

I'm confused tho, what type of answers you are looking for. If gritty realism isn't your thing, The Tibetan Book of The Dead might be for you. I know Jung wrote a lot about it, and I think Leary et al. wrote a psychedelic book parallel to it. I've never fully read it tho.

I have spent alot of time looking for answers. Two of the most interesting things i came across was:

1. The story of Billy Eduard Albert Meier. Read all the contact reports, they go as far as the explain pretty much everything. Its the first thing that has even rocked my entire paradigm and belief system. Fuck interesting.

2. Google near death experiences. Go to the first site and read the NDE stories. Amazing shit and religion neutral.

There are no answers in philosophy, only more questions.

Reading philosophy's ok but you'd probably be better off checking to see if there's a philosophy cafe or group in your area and attending that to start off with. As a subject, philosophy grew out of face to face spontaneous discussion & in many ways that's where it's at its best. The moment people start writing stuff they start fabricating, constructing fictions. The main thing is to be as honest & open as possible & to learn from each other. I echo others in saying you shouldn't expect to find answers, just a better understanding of the questions.
