Fuck You, thats why!
I'm on my 3rd ad for social anxiety in 3 years or so and just got put on zoloft this week after tapering down to 75mg efexor from 150mg.The first ad I was prescribed was paxil which made me blackout and act like an asshole when drunk, then effexor gave me these unbearable hangovers that made drinking not even worth it anymore.I'm wondering what to expect on zoloft and would like to hear other peoples experiences.

Well here is what i can tell you, SSRI's typically dont cause much changes when drinking alcohol on them, most people dont notice any difference and its strange that you are getting these weird side effects. so not many people have advice..try talking to your doctor about this

why do you drink? I wouldn't recommend drinking as appropriate strategy in dealing with social anxiety, I am dead serious about this. you can fuck up your entire life by making anxiety even worse, or worst case, you become a bloody alcoholic. this of course takes many years, it can last more than 10 years until you notice that you are an alcoholic.
anyways .. if you get a terrible hangover after drinking on Effexor thats because you are drinking way too much on Effexor. maybe you shouldn't drink at all? I know, nobody likes this perspective.

As I got Zoloft I began to overdose the pills to kind of cure my hangovers away (they were quite terrible too), once I did a big mistake, I had overdosed the pills (don't do that) and killed one ore more bottles of whiskey with a friend, than I managed to get thrown out of a bar where I touched some girls private parts while all the others (boyfriends etc.) were around. Then I got into a different bar, startet a chat with a random girl and asked about 100 times after her name... so kids, don't try this at home and don't ever take too much or use drugs, and most important: don't do alcohol!

I'm talking about drinking enough beers to get decently drunk say 6-12 budweisers.I don't drink much at all anymore but when I did it was to get drunk with everyone else not to self-medicate or anything and it was one night a weekend I could never go two nights in a row. What I'm saying is I drank every weekend with my friends up until age 23 when i got put on the effexor.I was on paxil first which made me freakout and lose my shit and not remember it, and the next day if I took the pill too early I'd throw up.

I can assure you the terrible hangover wasnt from drinking too much as it wasnt a hangover in the traditional way but a shitty feeling at center mass in my chest for a few days.

SSRIs generally do not add to the effects of alcohol but drowziness, dizziness etc are common adverse reactions that possibly could be worsened with concomittant use. The only other thing I can think of that potentially could be an issue is that SSRIs may increase bleeding risk and alcohol certainly does not help this.

Overall, most should be fine, but your history with the Paxil would make me tell you to avoid alcohol with Zoloft if I was advising you.

okay, 6 - 12 cans I assume, this is not too much. I don't know maybe bud is just a shitty beer? :D no, just kidding, I would recommend you not to mix alcohol with your medication. even rather small amounts can have severe side-effects. no one would seriously recommend to drink more than a beer or two on these kind of pills.

I also often could drink much more alcohol while on ssri then without the medication, I could stay awake for much longer and party all night although I had drunk a lot.

Thanks for the input guys, I will try drinking because it used to be fun and maybe it will be again but I will start slow and if anything fucky happens I'll go back to only the occasional beer or two like now.

a wise choice you make!

once a read about a guy who claimed he became an alcoholic because of his medication made him more resistant to alcohol, I think he was on Elontril (bupropion, it's the same as in Zyban but the pills are modified for a slower release of the drug into the body). I would agree on this, had similiar experiences while on Elontril (or Welbutrin), I could drink 3 or 4 large beers really quick without feeling effects of drunkyness and allmost no hangover next morning. Unfortunately I got deep into the shit years later. I'm not sure but I also read about the medication has been taken of the market in the U.S. after some deaths were caused by an overdose of the drug combined with alcoholism/alcohol withdrawal. Since Buproion acts as dopamin-reuptake-inhibitor, it is very likely to raise the risk of seizures especially when one suffers from alcoholism or benzodiazepin-withdrawal.

When I wasn't getting any replies here I did some googling and there have been mentions of people being able to drink more on zoloft and it making them crave alcohol.

So there's been some homemade beer brewing here and last week it tasted like pure fucking syrup. We transfer it from the main 'bucket' to 2l pop bottles and mix in the sugar and let it sit for a few weeks.I just tried a sip in case it was still syrup-like but its actually pretty good so I've got a cup in the freezer.I'll be sure to update as to how it affects me.

Drinking on either of those medications should be fine, the only thing you will notice is you will either have a low alchole tollerance or a higher tolerance. neither is good nor bad. My ex was put on Zoloft and Efexor, the only thing she found was her sex drive diminished (sucked for me) and she couldnt sleep, would be up for days at a time. But she was a fucken looney so who knows.

I myself have severe anxiety and social anxiety, insomnia blah blah blah. I know exactly how drinking helps you cope, in a way i find it better than any benzodiazepine. Alcohol changes the way you think and your body act, basically you just dont give a fuck anymore. I used to go out drinking by myself purely because i would have the most fun and meet so many random and fun people, without alcohol it wouldnt have been possible i would sit in a corner and chain smoke an entire pack of smokes shaking.

Keep going dude
