A strange rash has recently developed after vacationing in South Carolina with the family. A patch of light brown freckles on the outside of my hand. No irritation and the skin has not risen whatsoever. There is also amidst the spots what appears to be a small circular sore in the middle. Again no pain at all i cant feel that any of it is there. While on vacation I spent a lot of time in the sun. With sunscreen applied as needed, I did not get burned the entire trip but caught a nice tan. They look like liver spots like olderly people get on their hands but the sore suggests otherwise according to my doctor whom i saw today. He gave me a recommendation to a dermatologist and a cream to see whether its effevtive or not. He really had no clue what it was obviously. My appt with the dermatologist is not for two weeks as that was the soonest that I could get in. I should also note that skin cancer is currently active in my immediate family and almost gauranteed to happen if put in sunlight long enough. My aunt had a look at it, a woman who had has had skin cancer many times, and said that it looked like skin cancer where the sore was, but she had never seen brown spots loke what I had. I showed this to a friend of mine and he looked at me and asked if I drank a lot. It looked like a sign of liver failure to him.

I am 24 years old and have suffered from alcoholism for the last ten years. My drinking was bad and involved long heavy binges with hard liqour up to almost a liter a day. I have since gained control but still drink every now and again, as in at least twice a week although not in excess but in moderation. I am somewhat concerned thats why I am posting, my doctor acted very passive about it but my family and friends, not to mention my gut tells me otherwise.

What do you think?

Don't let your aunt and friends get you all wound up. If your doctor didn't seem alarmed, just wait until you see the dermatologist. It could likely be from sun exposure. I lived in Florida a long time, while I didn't sunbathe much, I still got the brown spots. A dermatologist will give you an accurate assessment.

don't worry about it
get a 2nd opinion
google it in "images" until you see the same thing
also heed your gut instincts here as a sign that you are worried that all this drinking could be causing long term effects

Indeed there certainly was a time that I felt immortal but recently reality has really given me a beating and it is very clear that I can not live the way I did. My history with alcohol troubles me deeply and I always had a hint it could become my ultimate downfall. The guilt is what troubles me the most but I am taking steps most certainly considered progress in my circumstance. Things have gotten much better and the only way to go is up

Just keep an eye on your hand until your second appointment. So if it changes shape or color take note and tell the dermatologist about the changes. If she see no problems with your skins appearance and your still worried talk to your regular doctor about your past/current alcohol abuse and get your liver checked.

Goggling images may panic you more, just remember we are not doctors and neither is the internet. Good luck. Keep us updated.

I have felt alright no other symptoms besides the ones described on my hand. I feel pretty tired working a lot of hours makes for long days, but a three day weekend lurks around the corner.

Thank you for the advice everyone I will keep an eye on it in the meantime!

It is really almost impossible for us to try and help you with this as we aren't doctors and skin conditions require the sherlock of doctors.. but something you may want to bring up with the dermatologist is this.. AND DON"T FREAK OUT as this is a shot in the dark rocky mountain fever The only reason I bring it up is SC is a real hot spot for it. But after consulting a phisician about this there is no way in hell he thought it could be cancer.

Please remember that this is just a crazy option provided by me on the internet. but I thought I would mention it incase it might just help.

Thanks neversick but my spots are not nearly as bad as the images provided thank goodness! They look more like liver spots like older people tend to get. This doctor appointment cannot come soon enough!

Okay guys I started taking fish oil about three days ago and the rash has almost completely dissapeared! Is this proof that the issue is a circulatory problem or perhaps an issue with my heart? The spots seemed to just come together into one big spot and it is now slowly fading. The sore has almost completely healed over night. This is a good thing but at the same time I am quite surprised. I began taking the fish oil because I heard it was good for you, not because I thought it would help my rash.

Any ideas?
