Let's talk about eggs

I was talking to my sister recently about eggs and I was telling her about some folk I have chatted online with had never tried any or are just startig to try them now, then we recalled about a family who came to stay about 20ish years ago anf the parents thought it was a good idea to let their kids try eggs.
Of the 4 kids, the youngest was the only one who seemed to like them. He then started showing signs of an ellergic reaction and we called for the doc.
Sad to say but the mother said that was the last time any of them were going to have an egg, I found sad as to me it is a cheap meal, snack and totally lush and versatile. But I remember that family, wonder if they eat eggs now ??

^^ Ummm yeah, let's not, hahahaha :D
*gags*

wooger, the shape of my poached eggs still look like desicated placenta however I have found that if I put more vinegar in to the water they are more conformed because the egg white congeals faster, i.e. straight away.
Also, 4 minutes is a good cooking time for soft/slightly runny but not totally runny yolks :) How long did you do yours for?

I see!! Well I cook mine for around 2.5 mins - that seems to be getting them pretty good right now.

and I am from the UK and yes pretty much everyone eats eggs here, I just have a weird list of food phobias!

Out of curiousity: where do the more recent egg-ites live? Is it more common to not eat eggs outside of the U.S.?

/dumbAmericanignorance :)

lol, you kidding. everyone eats eggs, everywhere =D

/doesntgetpplthatdonteateggz

Dude!! Cucumber is awesome, it's one of my favourite fruits. Let us know what you think when you've tried it! :)

haha made me laugh

i havnt had eggs in a goodwhile. my girlfriend used to make me scambled eggs all the time and i told her to stop because i was getting tired of them..oh how ignorant of me. iam craving some scambled eggs or an omlet. mmm maybe over easy also. i should just make em all and put them on one plate :)

since this thread inspired me, i've consistently had 1 hb egg with brekkie and one with lunch every work day. i started with no clue as to how long to boil an egg for to now mastering of the art. my weekly batch of ten or so eggs are now perfect all week. the whites and the yolks are as soft as can be without being runny, and the yolks stay golden and the shells just fall right off.

simple formula:
eggs in cold water, put to boil
once boiling count three mins
at three mins turn off heat and place lid for seven mins
after seven mins pour out water and leave under a cold tap

i refrigerate after they've cooled and now they remain absolutely delicious all week.

I'll try your specific formula tomorrow L2R, thanks! I used to always eat boiled eggs, but could never get the yolk runny whilst keeping the outside cooked effectively

Although for me now, It's all about the omelettes! A fantastic way to get several eggs in in one go. I make anywhere between 3-6 egg omelettes....planning an 8 egg omelette tomorrow, but I dont think my pan is gonna fit all that in!

3 eggs beaten
Sliced red and green peppers (or yellow, whatever)
Sliced spring onion
Diced chilli
Curry powder (cumin, turmeric [turmeric goes AMAZINGLY well with eggs I reckon), coriander etc)
Loads of black pepper.
NO CHEESE PLEASE thank you.

So, what's the verdict on raw eggs? It sure would be a lot easier not to have to cook them (I'm lazy :P). I've just heard conflicting information about whether they're really safe or not. Some say that it depends on where the eggs come from. Any clarification on this?

Just the possibility of getting food poisoning makes this pretty unfavorable.. if you've ever experienced true food poisoning (ie, laying on the floor throwing up for 6+ hours feeling like your on the 9th level of hell) you know what I'm talking about.

Other than that, cooking allows your body to make better use of the available nutrients.

^ Am I taking the same risk for food poisoning by cooking my eggs very lightly (runny yolk / minimally cooked whites)?

Salmonella, if that's what you're worried about from raw eggs, does not come from the egg itself but from the shell. It's on the outside of the shell and when the shell is cracked, it can easily get into the egg itself. Washing the egg off won't do anything either as the egg is porous and would absorb whatever soap you're using to kill the salmonella, rendering your breakfast off-tasting. :P

My professor of Food Selection and Preparation told us to never eat raw eggs and to never encourage a client to eat raw eggs due to the risk of salmonella. That said, I say that if you know the source of the eggs (local farmer), and you've seen the condition of the chickens (truly free range, not confined to the hen house, or confined to little cages), the should be okay to eat raw.

Also, don't go Rocky on us--Eating dozen of raw eggs could lead to a nutrient deficiency. Cannot remember which, but something in the raw white binds to a nutrient. But, this only happens when you eat dozens of raw eggs every day.

Tonight, if I get a chance, I'll pull out my notes from Food Select. & Prep--See if I have any other goodies on raw eggs or eggs in general. :)

Every time I've read brekkie in this thread I lol'd.

I'm in the same boat n3o is(or was), I can't stand eggs and this disappoints me. I want to like eggs but my experiences have been pretty uneventful.

This thread has given me the motivation to once again give eggs a go as hard boiled in a salad (seeing as I've got a ton of veggies in the fridge) and then maybe in some other forms. Fingers crossed.

This is going to require researching different way of cooking them too, not going to lie though I'm excited.

this thread has inspired me to go and do a soft boiled egg =D

i like eggs, good for protein and vitamin d and a few others if i remember correctly

^ LOL, yeah, same here. Don't much care for omelets either, or scrambled eggs. I'm definitely a runny-yolk guy.

But, this only happens when you eat dozens of raw eggs every day.

Wowzer. Dozens of raw eggs. Luckily this is a far cry from my current diet. :D

Hah, I know. One of my professors exam questions read, "Rocky would be setting himself up for what nutrient deficit?" Twas kinda funny. :P

Never did pull out my notes from two semesters ago--I do plan on doing that though as I need a review anyways (gonna have a cumulative exam after next semester 8)).

The proteiny goodness in an egg is more available in cooked form anyway. You are only wasting your time by drinking raw eggs, if you are doing it from a nutritionally-beneficial viewpoint. If it's got the Red Lion stamp on it, then you are good to go, in general. I know tonnes of people who drink loads of eggs daily and have never had an issue, so long as it comes from a quality source (which isn't difficult). But again...waste of time. Make omelettes and praise Allah for such an enjoyable way of consuming several eggs in one go!

The Australian guidelines recommend no more than 4-6 eggs per week. If you eat too many then yes, it can have a negative effect on your cholesterol levels.

lulz, i've been going through closer to 2 doz every week. 1 doz boiled and the other in other dishes.
