What if Trance/house/breaks ect. became totally mainstream? Would it become filled with the same crap as all other music has.
Like if Micro was on TRL with Carson and all.
Would this truly be good for the scene?
Me? I want it to stay much like it is now.
Techno(I use this genericly) is still pure (atleast in my eyes). Capitalism hasent tarnished it yet. I understand the need for DJ's to make a buck and all. But I want it to stay away from the likes of mainstream music. I dont want the absolute pure beauty in Techno to fade all at the cost of a few rich DJs and music exec's...........

Before anyone try's to give this guy a rude reality check, let me first say that I agree totally and there have been a few really good debates in this forum on the topic.
I'll see how the thread catches and add more later.
Kyk.

I don't really mind if it turned mainstream actually. It's just about the music. Truly, i like good djs and i respect them for it but juss because they collect some $ it doesn't mean i would stop listening their music. Thing is, as long as the dj doesn't spin cheasy shit after turning mainstream i don't mind really. 1.Underground, 2.mainstream but still the pure sound or 3. cheasy shit and 2 ppl dancing on his floor..totally up to him.

electronic dance music is very mainstream/commercial over in europe. alot of the club/euro trance stuph that people over here find underground is all over mtv/pop radio there.

Who Cares??? If it is... well then it's nice to see the rest of the world finally developed a taste in Music... plus the more people listening to it the more it'll be refined and perfected...

actually when things get more mainstream you get more junk because of greedy people jumping on the bandwagon trying to make a quick buck. this is one of the reasons trance is such a dirty word.

i have mixed feelings about the whole mainstream debate.
I think it's awesome that artists I have followed and liked for years are finally getting their recognition. These people work their asses off for something they love and I'm happy to see them finally being rewarded. I can remember when I saw BT open for The Crystal Method back in '97. Noone knew who BT was. But look at him now, he's practically a phreakin' rock star. Not to mention the recognition that a lot of my favorite local DJs and producers are receiving now.
But on the flipside one thing i hate about the whole mainstream thing is, i hate appearing like i'm just like everyone else. my taste in music was something i cherished and used to keep myself an individual among all the Hip-Hoppin', Head Bangin', Boy Band Singin' masses. But i'm not letting it bother me that much. i just use it to my advantage and try to teach people about "techno." i try to show them that there is more than just "Sandstorm" and "Heaven Scent."
I don't think we'll have to worry about the true beauty of "techno" fading in the mainstream mess. It's true that crap will be made, but the true, "pure" artists won't be tainted by all the Venga Boys and Baha Men that come out of the woodwork. at least i hope not. has anyone heard of the Jimmy Van M remix of "Who Let the Dogs Out?" Let's hope we never do.

I feel that it already has started to feel the effects of being mainstream music. A lot of the music is starting to sound more and more like the same song. People are starting to rip eachother off instead of doing new, creative stuff. That's probably why I listen to mostly underground music, because that's where all the inovation is right now.

hahaha, i cant wait for oakenfold to have a commercial for his new cd on Mtv, oh wait i already have....
Peace!

"Paul Oakenfold's Perfecto....over two and a half hours for you listening pleasure!!!"
I thought that I was having a horrible nightmare the first time this came on MTV...but, as I watched the Real World New Orleans marathon one Sunday (recovering from a night at Giant), this same commercial came on every hour.
Most mainstream friends of mine still think that every trance/house song sounds the same and are not into the scene/music at all. Hip Hop went mainstream (ie: Hammer,Puff Daddy), but there is still quality underground hip hop that is creative and original (ie: Jurassic Five). Fear not my fury friends...the true artists will not go anywhere and will still produce dope shit for all of us boys and girls.
But I still can't get over that damn Oakey commercial from MTV...

Doc how the hell are you? Wyatt I am rolling...

HeadCase has it. There will always be awesome underground shit, I've been listening to underground music my whole life. We sort of need sell outs like Paul Oakenfold to get people from other music styles to listen to electronic music so they will eventually like the underground stuff. If it wasn't for the popular sellouts, I might not have been listening to electronic music right now.

this is a portion of a message I posted elsewhere.
My friends, I dont know about you but I'm
sick of the music industry trying to tell me what to listen to. Thats why I
listen to UNDERGROUND electronic music. Whatelse is there Lets not just be
passive consumers and send a message to the greedy suits that run things in
this country. The DEMF in detroit last year had over 1 million visits over
its 3 days. Was there a pepsi or coke banner? no Was there a busch beer/budweiser
banner? no Was citi bank there? no. For that I commend Detroit and everybody
who was apart of that festival. Did corporate america look on with lust in there
eyes you better believe it. This isn't over. It will get worse before it gets
better. Lets just hope our culture and movement and above all else music doesn't
fall prey to these evils. We need to join together on this. Alas we don't want to
go the way of glam rock or disco or hip hop. Ever single musical idea has been
ruined by corporate america touching it. Please do what you can!!!

-------->Rave_GRAVY : NOT DJ_QUANTUM here. also NOT THE SAME PERSON...Roomate.
-Sorry boys "techno" is already mainstream. Listen to all the commercials...in the background what is it? Trance or alot of times jungle.
___> ANOTHER THING THAT BUGS THE SHIT OUTTA ME!!!!!! Why use the term Sell out? That is SO moronic. If someone says to you:"hey, how about we give you a BUNCH of money, get you more exposure, advance your career" what would you say? No....Then you are a fucking liar. The term sell out is used by the "little" fish that can't make it in a big pond.
Why keep it underground?--> If it is so great Why keep it lokced up so ONLY you can enjoy and appreciate it! selfish?
--> Also, those who say: "It will ruin the scene" BWAGHAHAHA Are you fucking kidding. The scene is pretty shitty Right now. If it becomes more mainstream..so what!.. The people that are in it for the right reasons (LOVE OF MUSIC IN GENERAL) NOT DRUGS..will continue to be "into" it.
SORRY BOYS--IT HAS ALREADY BECOME COMMERICAL--> DEAL WITH IT>
---> I don;t know about you guys, but In Columbus, being a raver is seems to be the "IN" thing to be from age 14 and up =(
