Katrina = Cat.5 = Goodbye New Orleans

mystic styles, where exactly are you? some people that i work with (me included) are coming over to the outback in slidell, la to volunteer. lemme know where ay are exactly!

I live in Long Beach, MS. It's about 55 miles from canal street (downtown) New Orleans, and about maybe 25 minutes from slidell. I actually have everything i need here and my house is intact.

Let me make it all known you you guys that most of MS is furious at the response to this hurricane. the only word on anyone's mouth is New Orleans.

Well fucking great, they are flooded and everyone left. But, we ARE STILL HERE. trying to live and find food and water in this rubble. Thousands here have no homes and their have been outbreaks of typhoid fever, dyptheria, and dysentery (sp?). NOLA needs help, but someone needs to give just al ittle focus to the people in MS that are still suck inside all the damaged areas. They won't allow us to leave, and they won't allow others to enter the area.

Yea man i know what ur saying....

Yall got the annilated (wind damage) we just got the flooding and rioting....

I guess its mainly cuz its a big city....I dunno....

glad to hear ur ok man....but i have no idea why they wont let yall leave...My boss's family, in Biloxi, is living in Alexandria, LA right now....Im pretty sure most of them rode out the storm too....So i dunno how they got out...:\

They put razor wire across the railroad tracks that separate the most devasted parts of the coast (the beach and southern most homes). It is more to keep people safe. There is nothing left there to loot. (After going across them, I understand why. It is EXTERMELY dangerous over there right now.) The diseases and smell and wreckage and death rotting out there is such a danger they need to keep people out.

It's like a war zone here. Hummers and armed guards everywhere.....

But we are safe. :) Thank God.

I heard that Long Beach was putting up a barbed wire fence around the whole town to prevent looting. True?

yes i have a picture somewhere. it's all the way across the town. guards are armed with AK-47s.

I'd like to hear a persuasive rationale given for why the Republican opposition to the appointment of an independent bipartisan panel to examine the Katrina failures makes any sense whatsoever.

The Roberts Commission investigated Pearl Harbor. FDR and Truman appointed this Commission despite the possibility that their administrations would be implicated.

In spite of Bush's stonewalling, we finally got a 911 commission to investigate the government security failures there. Not that it mattered much there because of all the classified info, but we're not dealing with nearly as much classified info in this instance.

So is it gonna take more public outrage to get an independent Katrina commission?

M, since you're our resident Bush administration apologist, care to give this one a try? ;)

^^^ even though I'm all for an investigation, what matters most right now is getting these people some much needed help.

lets point fingers later

Look, I've been down here since this before this storm hit. I haven't been out of my hometown for more than 10 min since August 27th.

People are still dying in New Orleans and Here. Local rumors around the medical professionals here is that the totally bodycount for everywhere katrina affected could be as high as 20-25 thousand. The right people still aren't getting help. Poor, ghetto ass people are receiving compensation because they are poor only, even they don't have damage to the publicy assisted housing they live in. It's almost like the skit from the dave chapelle show about "reparations" where he makes fun of the poor people spending relief money on fubu and shit. It's happening here. I've seen it. I had to give so much to others, and move two people into my home, so that it's made me broke. I don't know where i'll get money to pay august's bills. I had to spend most of it for my girlfriend (being stranded in houston and not allowed back) and some for having people move in. I was straight denied assistance from FEMA. This shit needs to be straightened out now. You can point fingers later. We are in dire staights.

I wonder why the news channels are down playing the number of dead, last I heard it was around 900. 20-25K is an enormous number and I hope it will never reach that high. Another thing is why is there slim to no coverage concerning the Astrodome in Houston. It definetly seems like the news coverage is slacking and now a few weeks after the disaster is being replaced with other 'news'.

It seems like American news channels are trying to sweep the problems under the rug. Why?

because it's been known for 50 years that if a storm of this magnitude would hit new orleans exactly like this, it would flood the city, break the leavees, and kill 10s of thousands. The leavees were only built to witheld a cat 3, which isn't really that bad of a storm. Considering that new orleans is nothing more than a swamp that was drained, and is under sea level, they should have bulit more protection for the city. New Orleans should have had a contigency plan to evacuate the poor who cannot evacuate themselves. Everyone who's ever been to NOLA or lived near it, knows this was going to happen and New Orleans wouldnt be prepared.

Wow......man i wonder if its just a state thing....i dunno....

Cuz my parents uncle, aunts, grandparents, friends, ect......all got their FEMA money.....just about everyone i know (regardless of income status)

Thats fucking BS.....I said it before it even happened....N.O is getting all of the attention and the rest of the Gulf Coast is getting neglicted....I mean dont get me wrong N.O def needs it.....but everyone else needs it just as much....

Dude....try applying again....My good friend who is just renting an apartment, got her FEMA money, she's only 23, blah blah, blah......I see absoulutely no reason why u shouldnt get it yourself....They did however try to fuck her out of it....b/c if they can spare the money they will.....but after fighting w/ FEMA long enough she did get her money....

Be relentless man....keep on hastling them....

yea and unfortunantly preparations like that take decades to build and be put in place.....:\

Look man, I'm not trying to be callous, but I've given a donation. My family has given donations. I have a life too, and there's only so much I can do personally. Everybody has to draw their own boundaries at what they are willing and able to sacrifice, and you know that. If I were in the same position as you, I'd understand that as well. If you wanna take someone to task, take all the fuckers who haven't lifted one goddamn finger to help you, not me.

The other main thing I CAN do is help keep up the pressure on the government to KEEP ITS ASS IN GEAR. If the government KNOWS it's going to have to answer promptly for its fuckups to an independent commission, don't you think the people running the show are going to be at least a LITTLE more concerned with mitigating the damage NOW, given that their asses may be hung out to dry if a commission's report slams the hell out of them?

Would you rather I play the "blame the victim" game, as your post implies with its "I'm more deserving than those ghetto-ass pieces of shit they're giving all the aid to, they don't deserve a damn thing" tone, and say, "well, your state DID vote overwhelmingly for Bush, so you kind of brought some of the shitty relief response on yourselves"? I don't think so.

Sorry, but I'll continue to ask uncomfortable questions now if I want and expect that someone in a position of accountability eventually has to answer them. I don't take kindly to you telling me "what you've given so far isn't enough" and asking me personally to do MORE for victims than I already have, while simultaneously backhanding me with your non-outstretched hand.

I'm not in the government, you're not family and I don't know you...as such I'm not under any obligation, strictly speaking, to do a goddamn thing for you, remember. I do care that you people are suffering, but when you snap at the hands of people who have already reached out to help you, it really doesn't encourage them to extend additional help.

I understand, though, that you're coming at this mainly out of sheer frustration, so I'm willing to do this...if the mail service is now running to your area, PM me your address and I will mail you a small money order donation, if that will help you. No bullshit.

In fact, I will make the suggestion to M that an announcement be made that anyone wishing to send you money directly should PM you for your address.

^^ u hit the head of the nail man......but try to rememeber this below
