Katrina = Cat.5 = Goodbye New Orleans

Been watching the footage of this on the TV here in Australia and cannot believe what i'm seeing. I also can't believe why every person in the US with a helicopter isn't flying in and airlifting people out of New Orleans.

i, too, cannot understand why cruise ships, naval vessels, riverboats, all helicopters - are not immediately being dispatched to help. bush can fly over the area safely to "monitor" the situation, but the people who really need that air support aren't getting it. i don't care...get jet skis in there, get jet boats, get whatever means possible to move people out and then come back and do it again. the response time on this is digusting.

I heard on FOX that one of the primary aims of Bush's visit to New Orleans, was to boost the morale of victims. :\

More than likely its just an attempt to get his approval ratings going up instead of down.

Bush is once again enexcusable for the way he handled yet another Extreme situation. IMO If I were one of the desperate folks in New Orleans,Mississippi,Alabama I would be in a constant state of agitation. It's now Friday and now the troops come rolling in, and our wonderful *cough, cough* president finally makes his grand apperance. FEMA knew that this was going to hit and and most likly be as devastating as it turned out to be. I understand full evacuation may not have been realistic, but fuck give these poor helpless people some help. The images are disturbing, and hopefully a wake up call for some people. Things like this happen all over the world. I have friends in both New Orleans and Mississippi and have not been able to reach them. I can only understand their level of outrage. What a sham. If I'm not mistaken I heard someone on CNN admit to the president not leaving his vacation a day earlier to deal with this situation. I'm glad there is an election coming up soon, but not soon enough. This is an embarrassment for the US govt. , and my thoughts are with those afftected.

Peace
Trav

Your right, the fed govt is terribly slow, but it does work generaly.

We are looking at the largest relocation in American history.

But that being said, the fed govt is not like the show Bewitched. It takes time.

That's just typical. Atleast when London got hit by the bombs, Blair left immediately from the G8 meeting to come back to London. And Bush says he understand peoples frustration, yet he was just sitting back and fucking relaxing on his vacation.8)

Bush to Land in New Orleans Today!

Wonder if the "Mission Accomplished" Banner is already placed at the airport.

Will he have his flight suit on?

Just wondering...

They had days to plan for this. How much time do they need?People don't have that long to wait,i saw on the BBC one woman crying out and saying 'I don't want to die like this' yet your president was on holiday, but yeah you just sit on your ass and tell us that 'it takes time' because that justifies why the president has handled this so poorly, right?

Pretty funny joke...........................................................................
I don't even watch Bewitched or give 2 shits about it sorry. :)
And I think the "fed govt." had plenty of time. Today is Fri. I can understand maybe a day. But there are resources available that could've been given to these folks. PERIOD. The Bewitched jab, please think about that ridiculous comment while people are dead and dying and families are 4ever changed. I would smack a mother fucker for saying some shit like that in my state of mind now. Regardless of who it was This isn't a time for jokes related to a bad television show. To furthur back up my statements flip on the TV and listen to Bush's statements about this. What a joke. He just says "I'm not looking forward to this trip." Who would be Mr. President??????? :(

Yes Faris (and others) but that's the difference between you and your Master (whatever) of Homeland Security (forgive the oxymoron). I just heard him say this (excuse the paraphrase, but its close to what he said).

"We are now responding with a force (of National Guard) that is probably above and beyond what we need, an overstatement, in order to send a message...."

Now, at this point I really thought he was going to say, 'to the world that we are sorry, we realise we fucked up, but now we intend to show what a brilliant job we can do of looking after our poorest and sickest people'.

But what he actually said was,
"....that lawlessness will not be tolerated".

There you have it. That's what your life is worth to them.

And then I heard Bush just saying "I'm really looking forward to my trip"

Statesmanlike or what.

Aaaaarrrrggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Well I just heard him say "I'm looking forward to this trip (and meeting the people on the ground)"

He's an idiot. Words fail me.

Bush on CNN "We are going to help rebuild Trent Lotts house. "

Just saw this on CNN, I couldn't believe it. For anyone who saw this, he said it with his smirk and a laugh. People are dying all over that city and that jackass has the balls to say he is looking forward to sitting on Trent's new patio (that's literally what he said).

I'll try to find a transcript when it comes out. You may be able to catch the audio at www.cnn.com

Just another reminder of who really matters to this administration. People? No. Political cronies? You bet.

EDIT: Mods, I just realized this probably belongs in an existing Katrina thread (sorry for making more clutter for you to deal with). Feel free to move it appropriately.

I have to chime in with others--the level of government incompetence in dealing with this disaster beggars the imagination. I cannot remember the last time the wheels of the powers that be moved with such stupefying slowness in response to a disaster like this. It makes the response to 9/11 look like a train schedule.

And indeed, the U.S.'s image overseas is suffering because of said incompetence.

World stunned as US struggles with Katrina
By Andrew Gray

LONDON (Reuters) - The world has watched amazed as the planet's only superpower struggles with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, with some saying the chaos has exposed flaws and deep divisions in American society.

World leaders and ordinary citizens have expressed sympathy with the people of the southern United States whose lives were devastated by the hurricane and the flooding that followed.

But many have also been shocked by the images of disorder beamed around the world -- looters roaming the debris-strewn streets and thousands of people gathered in New Orleans waiting for the authorities to provide food, water and other aid.

"Anarchy in the USA" declared Britain's best-selling newspaper The Sun.

"Apocalypse Now" headlined Germany's Handelsblatt daily.

The pictures of the catastrophe -- which has killed hundreds and possibly thousands -- have evoked memories of crises in the world's poorest nations such as last year's tsunami in Asia, which left more than 230,000 people dead or missing.

But some view the response to those disasters more favorably than the lawless aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

"I am absolutely disgusted. After the tsunami our people, even the ones who lost everything, wanted to help the others who were suffering," said Sajeewa Chinthaka, 36, as he watched a cricket match in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

"Not a single tourist caught in the tsunami was mugged. Now with all this happening in the U.S. we can easily see where the civilized part of the world's population is."

Presidents aren't allowed to be funny, sorry Mr. Bush. Yes, it was tactless, but no need to make a big deal over it. Bush isn't the sharpest tool in the, well.. he's pretty much just a tool. I wasn't offended by his joke though, there's no need to be offended by that. He was obviously trying to lighten the dark mood a bit, but talk about a poor choice of humor and bad timing.. he should know better. His N.O. speech will be painful to watch.

Hopefully though, we will get a lot of international support, even if Bush hasn't asked for it.
