Katrina = Cat.5 = Goodbye New Orleans

DarthMom said:
It is a mandatory evac, you mean to tell me the cops won't take you to a shelter if you call and ask? I doubt it.

edit,

I do realize it is easier to believe the "it won't happen to me" attitude, but when cat 5 is heading to you, you don't take chances, you just don't. Especially when your town is UNDER SEA LEVEL it is just stupid and irresponsible.
good to see you edited out that first bit. And no, I don't think the police would have been any help. Their hands were full enough before the onset.

I remember posting something regarding this issue back on page 1

What really pisses me off to no end is the likelyhood that for every stubborn idiot who elects to "ride it out", there is a person who is genuinely unable to leave because of either no transportation or physical limitations/disabilities, bad health, taking care of someone, etc.

If every one of those stubborn "die hard" idiots were to go grab an "unable to leave" person and proceed to the nearest exit, that "poptential loss of life" could and would be drastically diminished. Idiots! Grrrr

lol Yeah, that first bit was me overreacting, it isn't reasonable, but no matter how poor you are, you can get out if you need to. Hence my post, the mandatory evac means you MUST leave and you can get help IF YOU NEED IT.

I was actually talking about your post to my husband when the storm was first hitting, and I totally agree.

" but the people robbing clothing stores and jewelry stores need to be shot in the head. The world will be better off without them."

i think that it would be best to not judge people stuck in a circumstance you would never hope to have.

they are without access to civilization - water is contaminated, their lives and homes have been destroyed. most of them probably couldn't have left if they had wanted to. sadly, most of them are probably the poor inner city people you see in your day to day life and pass over as unimportant. those type of people have no cars and maybe no tv or internet or cell phones. they are going through hell on earth and you are saying they should be shot in the head for looting some jewerly and other misc. junk that insurance will cover some day anyhow. if they even manage to survive the next few weeks of insanity thats going on there.

.... i dont know what else to say.

I love the part of your reply that states "That insurance will cover someday anyhow"-- Like insurance money is free money and the insurance companies aren't going to be strained enough as it is without thieves looting. All that does is result in higher rates for people like me who pay to have it. Maybe you don't simply because you may thing people are obligagted to steal from others just because"insurance covers it".

^here's a tissue for you all. Like whats the deal with natural disasters anyway? When ever there is above normal weather activity we have to have a mass mourning session. Pathetic really. It's really a drop in the bucket of the grander scale of human suffering.

what the fuck ever (edited)....

Lets see......MS has confirmed at least 80 deaths.....FL and AL 10 or so and LA has yet to even start counting yet cuz they are still trying to rescue the survivors....Helicopters are fylling all over the city as we speak....

Not to mention.....Almost a million people are out of homes along the Gulf Coast and in my hometown of New Orleans, my mom, grandparents, aunts, uncles, many friends.....all have water to their roofs...they have pretty much lost everything...

Its looking like power will be out for at least 2 weeks.....People are pretty much starnded whereever they are at.....for that time....

The levees have broken in at least 3 diff places around the city so water is STILL rising....

Yea many times natural disasaters have been overexaggerated but this one def aint....

Its MUCH diff talking to family on the phone and getting a personal perspective rather than all of the TV BS....People are fucking freaking out....

Louisiana has a piss poor economy as it is....Its gonna be much harder for LA, MS and AL to recover than it will be for FL and all of their past hurricanes....

"i am 55 miles from new orleans. the eye is going to pass over here eventually. I'm going to put on When the Leavee Breaks by Zepplin. New Orleans is never going to be the same again."

anyone heard from Mystic Styles yet? yes, I know they probably have no power and phone service is almost non-existent. Thought I'd ask nevertheless. TIA

i'm pretty sure when you called the people that already left that it would have done you no good.

wtf? dearie, mandatory evacs are done when cops and assistance are still in town. they can still help you while on the clock.

I was realistic, I have kids and actually think about this shit, unlike most people.

Mandatory...cops make you leave...
Mandatory, you call and say help me leave, they may do it. They stopped taking calls for assistance to leave AFTER THEY CANT ASSIST ANY LONGER. Come back when you get what I'm saying. Yeah, I get it, some people don't make an effort. Well, here is a clue, some people do. I won't aruge this fact too much, If I wanna think someone is an asshole for trying to survive this with their children, your trivial posts won't change it.

here's a clue: obviously the police didn't "make you leave" because there's still people there. come back when you get what i'm saying. yeah, i get it blah blah dearie blah blah blah. i think many of these people would have been happy to get help to leave, only it didn't happen. what assholes they are for staying! dearie!

be realistic again: how far can you walk with those kids? in what direction? the red cross already left town and you have nowhere to go. you have no car because you're poor. there's no transportation at all. be realistic, dearie!

OH calm the fuck down.

I totally appreciate how pissed you are getting, in defense of others, since not hardly a soul normally does.

But frankly, people could have gotten help if they tried. IMO they wouldn't have been turned down if they had called IN TIME. You can disagree all you want, but until you have kids and know just how much you would fucking do to get them out of harms way, then [edited]!!! SERIOUSLY, A COP WOULD TURN EM DOWN IF THEY SAID I NEED A RIDE TO THE DOME? dont think so. overall, it is an option, you wanna defend any parent who stayed and say they used it? STFU. if they did, sorry, if they didn't, they coulda done more, argument over, waste of time. glad you care so much defend those who stayed, and i am not being sarcastic.

Where is this?? West coast where charlie hit? I didn't think it was that bad over here, (east coast, hurricane janine, or whatever the last one of the trio was) lots of roofs gone and windows, but not totally demolished!!

They're on the east coast... Martin County, a bit north of Jupiter. My mom got smacked dead-on by both jeannie and francis. I forget which one of the two she caught the eye though. Twas funny the first one of the two. Their sattelite dish was out, but the phones still working. So I was giving a weather update to them, from the internet, when the phones went out. They were without power for a few weeks, but not otherwise messed up. (Hard to take a proper shower when you have to hand-pump the (cold) water up from the well.)

And everyone... what beanergrl said is absolutely 100% true. Developers and contractors are a pack of shadey motherfuckers who will sell/build you a substandard house out of substandard materials, and laugh all the way to the bank! And corrupt inspectors and asseyers are so much the rule in South Florida that it's cliche. All these new fancy-pants multi-million dollar houses? Blown away! If you're buying or building a house in hurricane country, educate yourself, don't trust anyone, and keep those shysters under the finest of microscopes!

cya,
john

Actually I did. Glad to see you focus on what you do Michael. go away, I won't argue with you over this. Don't waste my time, you aren't worth it. And don't put words in my mouth. Saying I am angry at someone for not being smart is in no way saying I wish them dead so STFU. [edited], and shut up and don't adress me again you [edited].

whatever dude, I am not arguing with you any more. Thanks for the heads up that i don't give a shit abotu the people who don't have what I do, I will make a memo, cause then things get done.

The flood waters are still rising, pumps and levees are failing around the city. This could be catastrophic for the Big Easy as originally thought.
