This doesn't need to be said, but stay safe out there. This thing is so big that the swath of devastation is going to extend pretty far from the eye. New Orleans is supposedly going to be turned into a big swamp of flood waters and whatever toxic goo happens to mix in.

we have everything we need here. new orleans is going to be in trouble if the leavee does break. the whole area is just a large drained swamp as it is. all that is keeping it dry is that leavee...

dude you should LEAVE. (if you can) i was shocked how bad a cat 3 could get. it was terrifying.

once the roof gets torn off, your house, and shelter is GONE.

cat 5 will easily do that.

Someone on CNN was saying that even if they don't break, the water will go over the levees and that they will have to be destroyed to allow water to flow out of the city.

One of the reasons I'm so bearish on oil is because of the speculators that push it around in the absence of legitimate problems like this one. I wouldn't be surprised if this hurricane knocks some people out of oil, because unless there is extreme damage to infrastructure any spike over the next few days is going to slam down violently.

smart money is going to get into oil first thing in morning and sell at $100 then take the money and put it somewhere ultra concervitive because the whole market is going to go bonkers in the next couple days

The market won't go bonkers unless there is some severe and major reason to do so. It's at 69 now, 3 bucks higher than Friday's close. $100 is out of the question unless everything oil related in the Gulf is completely and totally destroyed. Any spikes will calm down in short order, I'd be surprised if crude was above $70 at the end of this week.

on speculation alone it will go up

how much?who knows this is quite possibly the biggest natural disaster to ever hit the us

call me chicken little but you wont see the sky falling if you have your head buried in the sand

its not at 69 it went to 70.80 in after hours tradeing on friday

Crude backed off it's highs above $70, that was today's session- not friday. 69.98 is the current price according to NYMEX.com. http://www.nymex.com/lsco_fut_condet.aspx?product=CL&month=Oct&cmonth=V&year=5&currPrev=C

It certainly will, but speculators tend to hit the markets quickly and hard, but that doesn't keep prices high for very long. Any decent trader is hedging the hell out of any long positions being held, there is going to be a significant drop unless it is complete devastation. Oil platforms and refineries are built to handle quite a bit, only time will tell.

m885 i agree with most of what you said in all your previous posts i am also bearish on oil but i dont see how we will not see a huge spike in oil the platforms are allready closed and the spike is allready hitting i the overseas markets i agree it will have to correct but the point is we are in for a wild ride in the morning i predict record volume in all markets

I agree on volume, but these major events play out in a predictable fashion in the financial markets. We'll see a spike, then things will cool down a bit until more information comes out about the damage. It could take a few days before the extent of infrastructural damage is really known, and if things aren't as bad as initially thought oil will return to pre-storm levels.
