Way back in the day (Windows 98 era) when I was young, I loved playing Warcraft 2 / Diablo. I spend hours, hours, hours on those games, engrossed in the world.

I have been out of 'gaming' for a long time, and have not owned a computer for a while until now (brand new but basic Windows 7 laptop). About the only games I have played this decade are PS2 games such as Grand Theft Auto and Gran Turismo. I owned an N64 and Gamecube back in the day but no PS3 / Xbox for me.

I cannot do online gaming (limited internet access) so the most popular games like World of Warcraft are out .. but as someone with too much free time, I need a modern game I can waste hundreds of hours on, at good value for the $.

Looking less for shooters and sims, more for RPGs/the MMORG-type (just can't be a game that requires extended high-speed net access).
As I am way behind the times it will take me a while to refresh my gaming abilities, I probably need one that doesn't require me to be a hardcore skilled gamer right out of the box.

Unfortunately I know nothing about my video-card so I can't say what I have. Certainly nothing high-end. But do have a 2+ Ghz processor with plenty of memory / storage space.

So many options :?

I would have recommended redtube.com but since your web access is limited you're screwed =D

For MMORPG type, I highly recommend Morrowind. It is single player so no need for internet access. It is by far my favorite RPG and I've had many countless hours of gameplay. The game is a little older so your PC should be able to handle it.

I'm going to be lame and say do something educational...haha. Sudokus and shit ;) . Crossword puzzles, mahjong for a lame/addicting one.

*clearly I do not play games on the computer ;)

@op. Torchlight would be what your after my mate. It has the Diablo pedigree and low system requirements. Replayability is ok so you should get a good few hours out of it. Can be had for less than 10 bucks when its on offer on steam etc.

Dues Ex will run fine on that pc mate not modern but still cutting edge even now, the character interactions and the differing ways you can play through the game are unbelievable (stealth your way in or all guns blazing or try and talk your way in!) and it'll cost next to nothing nowadays. It is a shooter at heart but much more than that with RPG elements.

Thanks for the advice all .. someone pointed me towards this awesome site, which purports to tell what games can/cannot run on your particular computer

http://cyri.systemrequirementslab.com/CYRI/intro.aspx

Unfortunately a lot of the games I've been recommended are apparently too much for my stock graphics card, and many others aren't listed on the site, but should be something out there for me.
Just need something to help stay sober .. Not sure gaming is much healther tho :o

ditto on fallout 1 and 2, also add starcraft. starcraft will run you about $20 and the fallouts about $5 each at gog.com

hours and hours of gameplay in all 3 games, and since they are all older, they will run just fine on just about any system.

Rayman Gold, Counter-Strike 1.6, Day of Defeat 1.6, Quake 1/2/3, Battlefield Vietnam - should be enough there to keep you entertained even with an on board video card.

I have always found the Sim City games to be addicting. I have found myslef playing it until the wee hours of the morning. And I don't think you need internet at all to play it. Maybe to download some new buildings, but with the newest version(s) of Sim City you could play for a really long time before you would even need to think about that.

Bioshock
Dragon Age
Fallout 3
Mass Effect 2

Most mentioned again because they truly are outstanding. RPG's are addictive, and some shooters like Bioshock or Mass Effect have strong RPG elements.

You'll need a good video card to play all of these. Since you said you got a computer fairly recently I assume your storage, CPU, and memory are up to par. Consider the video card upgrade.

^ Yeh an ATI 5770 is a great mid-range/budget card that will play just about any current game with medium level graphics settings. The best bang-for-buck card on the market at the moment in my opinion.

My favourite games recently have been the Witcher, Dragon Age Origins and Mass Effect (going to get around to the second one one day when I get the time). As somedood mentioned Torchlight is a great little ARPG similar to Diablo (made by some of the original devs) that's fun for a few hours and pretty cheap. There's a sequel on the way in the next 6 months and a MMORPG following later.

If you want to look at slightly older RPGs that'll be less graphics intensive you could try some of the older isometric ones like Baldurs Gate 2, Fallout 2 etc? Otherwise Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 are great (with community patches) if you're a star wars fan :)

I can't really comment on MMORGS, but from memory WoW has the biggest Western user base... it's the only one I've played and I quit like 3 years ago though. Definitely a nasty time-sink if you're not careful.
