Has anyone else in the U.S. gone through this program?

I've just completed a near yearlong stint in the thing, and was curious as to others experience with the program. I'll share my own experiences after I hear a few others.

For those who aren't familiar:

From Wiki:

Job Corps is a program administered by the United States Department of Labor that offers free-of-charge education and vocational training to youth ages 16 to 24.

Mission and purpose:

Job Corps' stated mission is to “to attract eligible young adults, teach them the skills they need to become employable and independent, and place them in meaningful jobs or further education.” [2]

Job Corps offers career planning, on-the-job training, job placement, residential housing, food service, driver's education, basic health and dental care, a bi-weekly basic living allowance and clothing allowance. Some centers offer childcare programs for single parents as well.[3]

Besides vocational training, the Job Corps program also offers academic training, including basic reading and math, GED attainment, college preparatory, and Limited English Proficiency courses.[3] Some centers also offer programs that allow students to remain in residence at their center while attending college.[citation needed] Job Corps provides career counseling and transition support to its students for up to one year after they graduate from the program[4]

Because Job Corps is a self-paced program, training can take anywhere between eight months to two years to complete, depending on the career area chosen and the learning pace a student sets for themself

History:

Job Corps was initiated as the central program of the Johnson Administration's War on Poverty, part of his domestic agenda known as the Great Society. Sargent Shriver, the first Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity, modeled the program on the Depression-era Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Established in the 1930s as an emergency relief program, the CCC provided room, board, and employment to thousands of unemployed young people. Though the CCC was discontinued after World War II, Job Corps built on many of its methods and strategies.[citation needed][original research?]

The current national director of the Office of Job Corps is Edna Primrose, who was appointed on March 12, 2010.[5] The Job Corps program is currently authorized under Title I-C of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998.[6]

Since its inception in 1964 under the Economic Opportunity Act, Job Corps has served more than two million young people.[citation needed] Job Corps serves approximately 60,000 youths annually at Job Corps Centers throughout the country.[7]

My g/f went through it when she was 15........she had trouble with another girl in her high school and said this program helped her get "right". She missed a whole sem. of school though which set her behind.

It's worthwhile if you're in a tough spot financially, and can even be fun at times.

However, the administration is absolutely fucked and the entire thing was an exercise in patience and endurance. I'm certain I've now a painful ulcer and my nerves are constantly on edge. I'm just now learning to be calm again.

I would really like to know more about this. I've been googling the fuck out of 'job corps' and it's like running in circles.

hey!! job corps is a good choice if ur trying to learn a trade, diffrent job corps offer diffrent things, the JC in Miami offers sound school, so if ur into music production, and DJ shit check them out,
my cousin went to the job corps and is now a master welder, makes $70,000 a year, works all over the south, he has the chance to do under water welding and make $120,000+ but the life span of underwater welders is 4 years. mostly fish attacks, cuz when u arc under water fish like shit that glows, so ur fuckd if a shark comes at u.

all in all its a good idea, its set up like a rehab sorta, u live there, work there, n go to class there, u get like $50 a week or something for spending money, and when u aint got shit goin for ya thats good stuff there, getn paid to learn shit.

take a test online to see what trade u wanna do, or figure out if u like fucking with eletricty(sp), building shit with wood, pipe fitting(putn shit together), shit all kinds of stuff out there!
whats the worst that could happen, if u finish the job corps, u get a trade and u can go anywhere in the US and get a job, cuz people are always lookn for people that know how to work.

btw.. IMO. be a Welder, u can get a good job at plants, hell matience, or building shit, plus start off making $15.00 hr.
hope this sorta helps lol
good luck!
