In that situation, the pacifist should do one step beyond being a passive pacifist, and pick up the Red Cross / Red Crescent

No different than Christian apologists trying to explain how actually the Bible doesn't condone slavery or rape if you read it in its full context.

One thing I've noticed about this conflict is that many groups or ideologies have the opposite stance on the matter from similar past occurrences.

I think people came to emotional conclusions way too quickly from social media, and are too rigid in their thinking to change their ideas on it. They pick a side and convince themselves it is the moral superior one, then spend the rest of their time convincing themselves of their bias instead of objectively stepping back to look at it.
