I want to make a solution to last for say 30 days... but i dont have the bacteriostatic water... how dangerous is it to use tap water in a sterile vial with a new needle and syringe?

i have amoxicilin for fish tanks... maybe after two weeks or so i could start taking the penicillin as a preventative measure once a day..?

This will not work, and eventually bacteria will grow in your solution. This happened to a friend of mine on Bluelight named dopiate.

What you want to do is buy benzyl alcohol, and add it to your sterile water (0.9% to 1% is enough).

A site that sells benzyl alcohol

50 ml (1.7 oz): $4.95

Since you only need to add ~ 27 units of benzyl alcohol to 30ml of sterile water, $5 worth of benzyl alcohol should last you quite some time.

what CH said is exactly what i did and the only reason i don't have anymore is cuz i dumped it cuz of cops thinking i only need it for drugs and im on bail so i got rid of it.

Common uses:

Benzyl alcohol is used as a general solvent for inks, paints, lacquers, and epoxy resin coatings. It is also a precursor to a variety of esters, used in the soap, perfume, and flavor industries, as well as for pharmaceuticals. It exhibits bacteriostatic and antipruritic properties. It is also used as a photographic developer.

At least you now know there are legitimate uses for benzyl alcohol. :)

thanks CH you are a wealth of knowledge.

does anyone know if benzyl alcohol be purchased locally in the united states?

are there any substituties for benzyl alcohol? I only ask because I'd rather not pay for shipping if possible, but I will if there is no alternative.

I have no idea if they sell benzyl alcohol in stores in the US, I wish I did.

You can research the legitimate reasons for using benzyl alcohol and then try to find shops that cater to those needs, they might have it.

Is there any substitute for benzyl alcohol? Probably, but I trust benzyl alcohol, and I wouldn't know any other preservatives that are this efficient off the top of my head.

okay two ideas I wanted to bounce off bluelighters:

1) taking tap water (or bottled depending on which is better) and adding salt to it to make a homemade saline solution

2) mixing in 1 capsule of penicilin into the vial

2) adding a comprable amount of a different alcohol (vodka/everclear) into the vial?

I realize the latter option will burn somewhat when injected...

adding antibiotics wont help you.

adding alcohol will help keep it for a few days but not much longer.

dont be lazy, your risking it all

i don't mean to be lazy.. it's just that i only need a tiny amount of benzyl alcohol and I don't want to spend 15 bucks on something i'll only use 10 drops of.

why do you say vodka or everclear will only keep for a few days and not longer out of curiosity?

Ethanol does not do a great job at preventing bacterial growth, sorry.

Then why doesn't whisky go off?

Because it is 40% ethanol. If you were making a solution for injection it would need a high percentage of ethanol to stay good which would be way too concentrated to inject. I guess you always could dilute it but it is too much trouble. Just spend a few bucks on some bacteriostatic water.
