Is it 'normal' to need caffeine + Valerian in the morning

Without this combo, I'm at odds with myself and ...just *off*.
As a recovering addict, booze and downers, caffeine pills and research uppers, I'm wary of everything...but this seems to work.

And, I keep the same dosage, actually a little less lately.
Everything's above the board and legal. Always has been.

Is it 'normal' for humans to require chemical crutches throughout their lives?
Is total 'sobriety' really the end goal? Is it possible?

Caffeine is used daily by the majority of the world's population. It is the most commonly used drug worldwide. Is it "normal" for humans to require chemicals of some kind or another? Yes.
 
All drugs have their associated risks. Stuff like valerian and caffeine is fairly benign, but even so it isn't exactly healthy to use them long term, or to depend on any drug to go about your daily life - physically psychologically. If you feel like this helps you through the day and doesn't interfere with your life, fair enough, but can be worth being aware of any health effects.
 
if your wary of caffeine / if its causing you obvious problems you can always switch it with yerba mate

if your lifestyle is overall healthy it shouldnt be a big issue though really

and altering ones perception with drugs is an innate part of human consciousness
 
I'm sort of curious, why the valerian? Have you tried other things? Lemon balm, oat extract and other nervines would seem to be more appropriate, but whatever works for you. Yes, I think it's normal for humans to need drugs...thousands of us on this forum, right? ;)

I use Valerian because it's nice and smells funky.
Takes the edge off the jittery tea body load.

Perhaps, 'healthy lifestyle' and 'sobriety' are directions not destinations.
There seems to be no baseline human experience.

But still, a difference between falling-through-the-floor dissociative states and post-Thanksgiving nodding on the Laz-E-Boy.

I feel like writing that on my wall! It's catchy, and applies to all of us who are struggling to find a balance between being completely gonzo and being suit-and-tie-guy.

Being clean is what you define it as being.
 
It's normal to you, but not to me. I can't see myself being addicted to valerian and caffeine.. I would say it's definitely a normal occurrence for people to deal with addiction for their entire lives. Sobriety isn't the goal ultimately, it's just being comfortable enough with yourself to not need chemical vices to feel content. I've met ex addicts before, i don't think addiction is a disease it's just a deeply imbedded mindset. A mindset that may have a lot to do with self control and understanding how to work in your own benefit when it comes to pleasurable activities in general.

I used to be a serious caffeine addict...I was also working the early early shift as a barista at that time - not a wise combination. I think eight shots in a < 6 hour shift was my peak. Always had to stop somewhere on the way home to get one more, just to make sure I would actually stay conscious. Gross. It wasn't just a morning getter-upper at that point. But it was normal to me then.

A while back I found a book that reflects on and evaluates the relationship between humans and their use of substances - all kinds! I have only just started reading it, but so far it's been intriguing and well-written. Amazon link if you're interested: Out of It: A Cultural History of Intoxication - Stuart Walton
 
I'd look into L-Theanine (suntheanine) brand. Taken alongside L-Glutamate and Caffiene should work alot better than Valerian. Valerians essentially useless in my experience.
