geez guys how about some positivity and rejoicing at the human spirit and some of the people who are pushing the very limit of what the human species can achieve (and that includes the mental side, so many other attributes other than being a physical specimen are required to be the best in the world at something)
guys this dates back to ancient greece and I see it as an amazing stage for people from almost every country on the planet to compete. Its a reminder that no matter where we come from we are all human and it is amazing to see what is possible by the human body and mind. Legends are made, feets of supreme endurance and strength are witnessed and some alas will not make their dreams atleast this time. Maybe us Australians get more fired up about the Olympics than others because we own in terms of sporting ability relative to population but, I dont think so overall, all medalists get fame glory and not necessarily fortune from some training that must have been almost unbareable at times.
You may argue there are people starving, climate change occurring all this time as we clap on a runner or a swimmer but these are some of the things I for one want to be around for my descendants and to be an opportunity for those who are currently less fortunate.
I do however have some reservations about the host nations human rights record particularly in Tibet and the Tianamen square massacre, who knows yet if it will be a good magnifying glass on the chinese authorities and raise awareness of this globally, or if they will choke some of the spirit out of the Olympics.
