Hi all. I have several San Pedro that I have to harvest as they are too big for the window and I have no where else for them :(

I am going to need to store them for a while as there is too much to use at the moment. Can anyone advise on the best way to prep them for longer term storage please?

Thanks for helping.

Dry soil and cold temperatures in the dark with good airflow, just like you would potatoes. Same thing if you harvest them, but cure the cut ends in front of a fan first.

I’ve had a few San Pedros rolling around the back of my car for about 4-5 months, and then blended/boiled them to full effect. You’ll need to make sure they don’t get mold; cut them with a clean knife, then leave them in a dry area preferably in sunlight for a few weeks so theyll dry (or in front of a fan as suggested). After they callous over they’ll be good for some time. I’ve even read storied of people repotting months old cuttings and getting them to grow.

They really are quite hardy. 👍

So I could skim off all the skin, dry it in the oven (advice on temps?) to speed the whole thing up, rather than wait the weeks and then grind it down and store it for months in a jar in a dark cool place?

What about longer term storage, would the freezer do any harm?

Thanks for replying.

Yes, cactus can be dried in the oven at low temperature, 180 F (80 C), to avoid burning. It generally takes 12-18 hours. It can then be ground in a coffee grinder and stored in a jar at room temperature.

Thanks man, that's what I was hoping.

Yea drying works, even not you can store fresh cuttings for a year or more and sometimes still pull them out and grow them afterwards. But theres no issue doing so than using them in tea instead.

My favorite way to store long term is make tea, dry down to a tar and then store away the tar until ready for use. Then you have both a shelf stable product and it is an extract as well so higher potency than dried plant.
